Siege of Vicksburg Diary by Soldier in the 77th Illinois Infantry

Diary spanning 1862 and 1863 by William W. Avery, a soldier in the 77th Illinois Infantry, Co. C, with content covering the Siege of Vicksburg and also the Battle of Arkansas Post. Avery was promoted to Corporal during his enlistment, and writes every day in his diary which begins on 4 September 1862 and ends on 17 June 1863. On 3 November 3 1862, Avery writes, “Laid out on picket last night. It was quite cold. We have a prisoner…Colonel Bates from Tennessee. I asked him what he was fighting for. He said, ‘For Freedom’. I wonder who has taken away his freedom?…November 16th On the road to Louisville…Passed by a place that the boys say Uncle Tom was sold from. It used to be owned by Colonel Allen…Democrats talk of negro equality. Where will you see more of it than here? The principal produce here is negroes and whiskey and secesh…December 22nd We are at the place called Friar’s Point. The boys burned part of the town. December 23rd Stayed last night on the Arkansas side of the river…We put up at Gaster’s Landing. The boys burned most of the place…December 28th We marched some seven miles and came up with the other brigade that came out last night. There was some sharp cannonading on our left. We were marched through the other brigade and displayed as skirmishers on the right in advance of any other regiment. One of the men shot a rebel. One of them shot through the coat sleeve of one of our men and it passed through his blanket…December 29th We were called in and stacked our arms but did not stay long. Were ordered out as skirmishers on the same ground as yesterday. considerable firing. The boys fire whether they see anything or not. A few shots are returned. They shell us. We are ordered back as a reserve…” Sold for $3,500.
