John Augustine Washington (1736–1787) was a member of the fifth Virginia Convention and a founding member of the Mississippi Land Company. During the American Revolution he was a member of Westmoreland County’s Committee of Safety and the Chairman of the County Committee for Relief of Boston.

Benjamin Franklin Signed Land Grant for Revolutionary War Veteran — From 1787 One Month Before Franklin Attended the Constitutional Convention

Benjamin Franklin land grant signed in Philadelphia on 27 April 1787, just one month before the start of the Constitutional Convention held in that city. Franklin served as President of Philadelphia’s Executive Council and signs ”B. Franklin” in that capacity, granting Private William Williams land in exchange for his service in the Revolutionary War. Document measures 15” x 12.5”, beautifully matted and framed to 40” x 23”. Weighs 14 lbs. Folds, toning and light staining throughout. Very good condition. Sold for $15,125.

George Washington Autograph Free Frank Signature in 1779 as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army During the Revolutionary War

George Washington free franked envelope, signed and addressed in Washington’s hand as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Washington addresses Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Walton White of the 4th Regiment Light Dragoons, with ”public service” also written on the address panel by Washington. Docketing on side panel in another hand reveals the date of 10 February 1779, at which time White served with the 4th Light Dragoons; White previously served as Washington’s aide-de-camp in 1775.

Washington’s large signature, ”Go: Washington” measures approximately 3.5” x .75” on document measuring 13.5” x 8.25”. With paper loss around partial red wax seal where opened, and folds, not affecting Washington’s signature. Some soiling, but overall in very good condition with a prominent signature by the General and first President. Sold for $10,000.

Revolutionary War Map 1776

Revolutionary War map dated March 1776. “The Theatre of War in North America, With the Roads and a Table of the Distances…” Printed in London for R. Sayer and J. Bennett. Map depicts the area east of the Mississippi River from James Bay to Cape Canaveral, and locates provincial boundaries, towns, forts, roads, Indian villages, New England fishing waters, and the like. An inset is comprised of “Evan’s Polymetric Table of America,” which allows one to calculate the distance between most of the prominent towns. Text below the map reads, “A Compendious Account of the British Colonies in North America,” which devotes a paragraph of description to each of the North American colonies, including Florida, Canada, and the Province of Quebec. Issued separately by Sayer and Bennett, who also published “the American Military Pocket Atlas,” that year for the use of British officers. A notable map of the American Revolution, published the same year as the American Declaration of Independence. 20.75″ x 28.5″; 29.25″ x 37.5″ framed. Excellent condition. Sold for $6,000.

American Army Establishment Broadside

Scarce Revolutionary War “In Congress” broadside entitled, “Establishment of the American Army.” Printed by John Dunlap: York-Town. Dated 27 May 1778 document divides the American army into four parts; infantry, artillery, cavalry and provost and details positions and payments within each department. Further resolutions dated 29 May and 2nd June detail compensation and rations. In part, “…Resolved, That each battalion of infantry shall consist of nine-companies, one of which shall be of light infantry; the light infantry to be kept compleat by drafts from the battalion, and organized during the campaign into corps of light infantry: That the battalion of infantry consist of…Colonel and Captain [etc]…” 2pp. front and verso. Measures approximately 9.25″ x 14″. Fragile paper shows chipping and paper loss to edges and near complete separation at folds. Overall toning, wear and soiling, else good condition. Sold for $4,200.
