The Egyptian Cross Mystery is a novel that was written in 1932 by Ellery Queen. It is the fifth of the Ellery Queen mysteries.
Ellery Queen is a pseudonym created in 1929 by American crime fiction writers Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee and the name of their main fictional character, a mystery writer in New York City who helps his police inspector father solve baffling murders. Dannay and Lee wrote most of the more than thirty novels and several short story collections in which Ellery Queen appeared as a character, and their books were among the most popular of American mysteries published between 1929 and 1971. In addition to the fiction featuring their eponymous brilliant amateur detective, the two men acted as editors: as Ellery Queen they edited more than thirty anthologies of crime fiction and true crime, and Dannay founded and for many decades edited Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, which has been published continuously from 1941 to the present. From 1961, Dannay and Lee also commissioned other authors to write crime thrillers using the Ellery Queen nom de plume, but not featuring Ellery Queen as a character; several juvenile novels were credited to Ellery Queen, Jr. Finally, the prolific duo wrote four mysteries under the pseudonym Barnaby Ross.

Scott Fitzgerald’s ”The Great Gatsby,” published by Charles Scribner’s Sons: New York: 1925, with the nearly impossible to find first printing dustjacket. Every point is present: 1925 is printed on title page; Charles Scribner’s Sons logo appears on the copyright page with no subsequent printing statements; ”chatter” appears on page 60; ”northern” appears on page 119; ”it’s” is printed on line 16 of page 165; ”sick in tired” is found on page 205; ”Union Street station” is mistyped on line 7-8 of page 211. Bound in dark green cloth boards with title and author’s name blind-stamped to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Francis Cugat’s scarce original unrestored first printing dustjacket has the lowercase ”j” in ”jay Gatsby” on the back panel hand-corrected in ink. Sold for $50,000.
Very rare ”Gone With the Wind” novel signed by the cast. New York: The MacMillan Co., 1938, later edition. Novel is signed on the front endpapers by the leading cast members: Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Hattie McDaniel, Ona Munson, Evelyn Keyes, Ann Rutherford, Thomas Mitchell, Carroll Nye, Oscar Polk, and unit manager William J. Scully. Underneath their signatures are the names of their ”Gone With the Wind” characters, written in another hand. Housed in a custom leather clamshell box with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine, ”Gone With the Wind / Autographed by Twelve Members of Cast”. Book measures 6” x 9”. Toning to signature page, otherwise very good. With PSA/DNA for all actor’s signatures. Sold for $15,000.

All measure 5.75″ x 9″ with top edges red. A beautiful set with only minor edge wear, toning to endpapers and very light wear to jackets. One of the nicest “Lord of the Rings” sets available. Feynman signs on the half-title page, ”To Bill – Congratulations on your graduation. / Richard Feynman”. New York: W.W. Norton & Co., 1985. Book shows full number line on copyright page, also stating ”First Edition” as called for. In original first printing unclipped dust jacket, showing $16.95 price and two reviews on back cover. In this unconventional book by the Nobel Prize winning physicist, Feynman discusses the Manhattan Project, safe cracking, presenting as a young man in front of Albert Einstein, and much more. Book runs 350pp. and measures 5.75” x 8.5”, bound in orange cloth boards. Slight cocking to spine and light shelf wear, overall near fine. Dust jacket is slightly chipped with some sunning to spine, in very good condition. One of the few first printings signed by Feynman. Sold for $12,500.

In matching slipcase with Charles Scribner’s Sons plate, again listing the limited edition as #214. Measures 6.5” x 9.5”. Some chipping to seams of slipcase, overall in very good condition. Chipping to spine label, otherwise book is near fine. Sold for $10,313.

Dashiell Hammett The Thin Man first edition signed. New York: Alfred A. Knopf: 1934. First edition, first printing rare book. Hardcover sans dustjacket. Blue ink inscription on ffep reads: “For Paul Hollister / with best regards / Dashiell Hammett / New York / January 6, 1934.” First printing copy of the very first in Hammett’s iconic series of Nick and Nora detective books, which in turn inspired various movie adaptations, including those starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. Book, measuring 5″ x 7.5″, runs 260pp. Inscription bold and legible, but suffers slightly from ink bleed. Cloth boards feature a stylish theater mask printed in blue ink on the front cover and excellent red and blue spine design. A large but light stain on the front cover and some shelf wear to bottom edges, very mild interior toning, but overall bright. An excellent copy in very good condition. Sold for $9,433.

One of only 1,537 copies printed, this volume still retains the very rare unclipped first edition dust jacket, showing the original price of $2.50. First edition has matching dates of 1929 on the title and copyright pages, and with “First Published, August, 1929″ at the top of the copyright page. Measures 5.5″ x 8”. Very handsome copy is bound in yellow-gold cloth stamped in black, with top edge blue. Very light soiling and wear to book, otherwise near fine. Illustrated by Russell Haviland Tandy. “The Secret of the Old Clock” is the first volume in the Nancy Drew series, written under author Mildred Wirt Benson’s pseudonym, Carolyn Keene. All first edition points present: (1) no silhouette of Nancy Drew on the dustjacket; (2) title lettering outlined in black on front board; (3) blank white endpapers; (4) a glossy frontispiece illustration and three glossy internal illustrations by Russell Haviland Tandy; (5) copyright page lists the first three books, “The Secret of the Old Clock,” “The Hidden Staircase” and “The Bungalow Mystery” which were printed around the same time as the start of the Nancy Drew series; (6) copyright page also states: “Other Volumes In Preparation”; (7) post-text ad page states: “This Isn’t All!” followed by ads for various series, including listings for 8 “Hardy Boys” titles, 11 “Ted Scott” titles, a “Famous Rover Boys” ad, 30 “Famous Rover Boys” titles, 33 “Tom Swift” titles, 9 “Don Sturdy” titles and 12 “Radio Boys” titles.
