2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke’s 1951 short story “The Sentinel” and other short stories by Clarke. A novel released after the film’s premiere was in part written concurrently with the screenplay. The film, which follows a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient computer HAL after the discovery of an alien monolith affecting human evolution, deals with themes of existentialism, human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

Stephen Hawking Signed Novel of Science Fiction — One of the Scarcest of Signatures, Signed by Hawking in 1976

Stephen Hawking book signed from 1976, shortly before Hawking was not able to write his name due to ALS. Hawking signs this novel, ”October the First is Too Late”, on the blank page opposite the title page in his stilted, but legible handwriting, reading ”Stephen Hawking” in blue ballpoint; interestingly, some doodles appearing on the back page also have the same stilted quality, indicating they may have been done by Hawking as well. Signature was acquired by Professor Antal Bejczy, a NASA scientist who developed the Mars Rover Sojourner and who worked with Hawking at CalTech in the 1970s. Novel is a 1976 paperback printing by author Fred Hoyle who, beyond his writing pursuits, was principally a theoretical astronomer. Like Hawking, he worked at the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge and also at CalTech where, during a sabbatical, he developed a theory of stellar nucleosynthesis. Book measures 4.5” x 7.125”. Toning to interior pages, and some creasing to covers. Very good condition. Sold for $7,500.

Stanley Kubrick Autograph Letter Signed While Making “2001” — “…my…most sincere hopes for Miss X. She sounds so good it could be a come on for a wife-swapping ad in the Enquirer…”

Stanley Kubrick autograph letter signed, dated 26 March 1967. Here, the director writes to New York University physicist and personal friend, Jeremy Bernstein. Bernstein wrote a famous “New Yorker” profile of the director as he was making “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Reads in full: “Congratulations and my suspenseful and most sincere hopes for Miss X. She sounds so good it could be a come on for a wife-swapping ad in the Enquirer. There is a good chance we will return to London after the film opens so it would be great if you did come to Imperial College. Your parents probably told you they visited the studio. I don’t know what impression they got of things. I hope they found it interesting. Your father reminds me of Omar Bradley and your mother of you, though you (sound) speak exactly like your father. I’d like to see the Oppenheimer obituary. I enjoyed the piece you sent. I do hope you work things out to your satisfaction.” Signed “Stanley” in bold, black ink. Letter on one page is lined and measures 8″ x 12″. Very minor toning and folds throughout, else very good to near fine. Sold for $1,291.

Stanley Kubrick Typed Letter Signed While Making His Famous Film “2001” — “…What a villainous person he sounds like. The movie is going well…”

Stanley Kubrick typed letter signed on his personal stationery, dated 8 December 1966 as he was filming “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Letter is addressed to “New Yorker” journalist Jeremy Bernstein, who profiled the director for the magazine and the two remained friends. Reads in full: “Your description of the encounter with Morris Shamos is spine chilling and beautifully written. It sounds to me like you are about ready to do your first work of ‘fiction.’ The drama of the academic scene is much more intense than one would have imagined. What a villainous person he sounds like. The movie is going well. I am not sure of the date about coming back to New York. Let me know how things turn out.” Signed “Stanley” in blue ink. Letter measures 7.25″ x 10.5″. Very minor toning, else near fine. Sold for $983.
