Sell Your Sabine Baring Gould Onward Christian Soldiers Signed

The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (28 January 1834 – 2 January 1924) of Lew Trenchard in Devon, England, was an Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist, folk song collector and eclectic scholar. His bibliography consists of more than 1240 publications, though this list continues to grow. His family home, the manor house of Lew Trenchard, near Okehampton, Devon, has been preserved as he had it rebuilt and is now a hotel. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being “Onward, Christian Soldiers” and “Now the Day Is Over”. He also translated the carol “Gabriel’s Message” from the Basque language to English.

Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold a handwritten and signed copy of Sabine Baring-Gould’s “Onward, Christian Soldiers” for $2,000. Please see details below:

Sabine Baring-Gould Autograph Lyrics Signed to His Iconic Hymn, “Onward, Christian Soldiers”

“Onward, Christian Soldiers” is a 19th-century English hymn. The words were written by Sabine Baring-Gould in 1865, and the music was composed by Arthur Sullivan in 1871. Sullivan named the tune “St Gertrude,” after the wife of his friend Ernest Clay Ker Seymer, at whose country home he composed the tune. The Salvation Army adopted the hymn as its favoured processional. The piece became Sullivan’s most popular hymn. The hymn’s theme is taken from references in the New Testament to the Christian being a soldier for Christ, for example II Timothy 2:3 (KJV): “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”

Autograph lyrics signed for “Onward, Christian Soldiers” by Sabine Baring-Gould, who wrote the perennially popular hymn in 1865, reportedly in a burst of creativity that took only 15 minutes. The hymn has since been sung at such important events as the Atlantic Charter in 1941, by The Salvation Army as its preferred processional, and often in Civil Rights protest. Single page measures 6.5″ x 11.75″, comprised of five 8-line stanzas, boldly signed at the conclusion “S. Baring-Gould”. Folds, uniform toning, and expert restoration to verso, overall very good plus condition. Sold for $2,000.
