The first ever Oscar awarded for special effects makes this statue a historic Hollywood trophy. Farciot Edouart’s 1938 Oscar in the category of “Outstanding Transparency Special Effects” for “Spawn of the North.” This is the first academy award for Edouart, the ten-time Oscar winner and groundbreaking technician. He was presented the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award on 23 February 1939 at the the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. He shared the special award that would pave the way to become a category in its own right with Gordon Jennings. The movie starring Henry Fonda is about rival fisherman in Alaska directed by Henry Hathaway. Edouart, who began as a cameraman in 1915, was well known in the movie industry as an innovator, especially in the area of rear projection. Two engraved plaques are placed on opposite sides of the pedestal. One reads, “Academy First Award / To / Farciot Edouart / For Outstanding / Transparency Special Effects / In The Production Of / ‘Spawn of the North’ / 1938”. The other reads, “For The Transparency Process Photography / In The Paramount Production / ‘Spawn of the North’ / To / Farciot Edouart / Assisted By / Loyal Griggs”. The figure and film reel, composed of gold-plated britannium and measuring 10.25″ tall, top the pedestal, bringing the total height to 13.25″. The pedestal’s diameter measures 5″. The award weighs 6 pounds. Moderate rubbing to statuette and moderate chipping of base. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $96,227.

Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith screen-worn black suits and prop weapons from ”Men in Black II”. Extensive lot from the hit UFO franchise includes the iconic black suits worn by Tommy Lee Jones as Agent Kay and by Will Smith as Agent Jay. Pair of suits were tailor-made for the actors by acclaimed costume designer John David Ridge. ”Mr. Tommy Lee Jones” is typed to the labels of his jacket and pants, as is ”Mr. Will Smith” on the labels of his jacket and pants. Both suits include a white cotton dress shirt, custom made by Anto of Beverly Hills. Shirts feature monograms embroidered in blue thread to the labels, ”T.L.J.” and ”W.S.”, respectively. Shirt labels are dated June 2001 in type. Ensembles are complete with unlabeled black neckties and velvet pocket squares. Wardrobe is accompanied by the pieces de resistance, Agent Kay & Jay’s giant alien-blasting weapons. Impressive pieces are made of solid rubber finished in silver paint. Agent Kay’s single-barrel weapon in silver, with green at the top measures a whopping 40” in length. Agent Jay’s tri-barrel weapon measures 31.5”. Will Smith’s jacket and trousers feature small holes for his wire harness to pass through, with labels inscribed ”Harness” in ink, and the letters ”FC” are handwritten to his shirt label. Some scuffing to props and tearing to the back of Jones’ shirt, else lot is near fine overall. With a COA from Prop Store and a copy of costume department’s info sheet. Sold for $25,428.

”Uncivil Warriors” One-Sheet Movie Poster From 1935, Owned by Moe Howard
Very rare one-sheet movie poster for ”Uncivil Warriors”, one of the earliest and most beloved Three Stooges films, released in 1935. One-sheets from the 1930s are exceedingly rare, with this poster all the more special as owned by Moe Howard. Linen-backed poster measures 27” x 41”. Mild restoration at folds. Colors remain bright, with strong visual appeal, in near fine condition. Sold for $37,500.
Ultra-Rare Original 1946 Gilda Movie Poster Featuring Rita Hayworth in Her Landmark Role
Original Columbia Pictures 1946 Gilda movie poster starring Rita Hayworth in her best-known performance as Hollywood’s ultimate femme fatale. Directed by Charles Vidor, “Gilda” was released just after the end of WWII and was lauded for its mixture of genres and rather modern approach to character interaction. The poster features the iconic Hayworth in a debonair pose holding a cigarette with a headline reading in part: “There NEVER was a woman like Gilda! / Columbia Pictures presents / Rita Hayworth as Gilda with Glenn Ford…” Poster by Morgan Litho Co. measures 27″ x 41″ and has folds throughout, with a long vertical scratch and small tear down the front of her dress, reinforced with a piece of brown tape on the back of poster. Some light tan stains and pinholes on and near the borders. Very good condition overall with still vibrant colors. Very scarce. Sold for $25,000.

With two of Hollywood’s most bankable stars in the lead, Borris Karloff & Bela Lugosi, the darkly atmospheric and haunting film was considered too strong for 1935 audience’s tastes, but is now held as an exemplar of Universal’s horror franchise, following on the heels of “Dracula” and “Frankenstein”.
