Walt Kuhn was an American artist who was associated with the modern art movement. Some of the best known paintings of the 20th century include his portraits of circus entertainers. Kuhn is also remembered for organizing the Armory Show, the first large scale exhibition of modern art in the states.

Lovely tree and arbor drawing by artist Walt Kuhn, signed and inscribed by him to Mary MacArthur, daughter of Helen Hayes and Charles MacArthur. Celebrated as a skilled cartoonist and painter, Kuhn used green and black pens to draw this nature scene on the blank page of a book. Reads in full ”Dear Mary / Never trust a man / who paints pictures / Walt Kuhn / 1931”. On the verso, screenwriting legend Ben Hecht, who wrote ”The Front Page” with Charles MacArthur, also writes to Mary: ”Mary when you’re twenty three / On that sad day I reflect / You won’t think of marrying me – / Poor bald doddering Bennie Hecht”. Page measures 7” x 8.25”. Near fine. Sold for $1,250.

Taos Society of Artists founder and American Southwest artist Oscar Edmund Berninghaus original ”Native American Chief” sketch signed, drawn circa 1900. Illustration is drawn in pencil on cream-woven paper measuring 5.75” x 7.5”. Signed in pencil, ”O.E. Berninghaus” at lower right. With an LOA from Barbara Brenner of the Taos Heritage Publishing Company. Near fine. Sold for $3,750.
Ray Bradbury Personally Owned Trio of Sketches by Joseph Mugnaini
Ray Bradbury personally owned Joseph Mugnaini sketches for his story ”The Pedestrian”, which was published in ”The Golden Apples of the Sun”. Lot of three sketches each feature a different perspective on a nighttime noir scene. Each measures 6” x 8”. Adhesive to versos and some ink squiggles to border of one drawing, else near fine. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $3,176.
Andy Warhol signed first edition of ”The Philosophy of Andy Warhol”, with his hand-drawn illustration of the Campbell’s soup can that he designed. Warhol signs ”Raymond / Andy Warhol” on the half-title page, where the Campbell’s sketch also appears. Published by Harcourt Brace: New York: 1975, first edition bound in yellow and burnt orange boards runs 241pp. and measures 5.75” x 8.5”. Very light wear to boards and small stain to top of illustration page. Very good to near fine overall. With a COA from PSA/DNA. Sold for $2,250.
