Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold two Frank Woolworth autograph letters. Please see below:
Frank Woolworth Pair of Letters Signed, in Handsome Framed Presentation
Frank Woolworth framed presentation containing two typed letters signed, one from 1892 and one from 1916. Both on Woolworth Co. letterhead, 1892 letter concerns rebates, while the 1916 letter concerns aggressive expansion and hiring a manager to oversee the expansion. 1916 letter reads in part, ”…This territory comprises at the present time 40 stores…which, of course, did not show anywhere near the amount of profits that they will show in the year 1916…” Both letters are signed ”F.W. Woolworth”. Woolworth pioneered the idea of five-and-dime stores and moved America into fixed pricing, rather than haggling. His retail stores would ultimately encompass the entire country, along with the U.K. and Europe. Each letter measures approximately 8” x 10.25”, in near fine condition. Nicely framed to 37” x 35.5”, with three photos of Woolworth and two of his stores.
Sold for $1,875.
Frank W. Woolworth typed letter signed on his ”F.W. Woolworth / Woolworth Building” stationery, dated 13 May 1915. Letter is addressed to the Hon. James Beck, a lawyer and politician. Reads in full: ”My dear Mr. Beck: On April 6th you kindly sent me your book ‘The Evidence in the Case’ with your autograph and a few lines attached, and I thank you for this wonderful book. I read in the newspapers part of the article at the time it was first published, and I was very much interested in it, and it is with great pleasure that I accept this book from you. Furthermore, you cannot imagine how I enjoyed your speech at the Trust Company dinner at the Waldorf last Thursday night. In fact, I have heard you speak a great many times, and I have told all my friends that I would prefer to hear you speak on any subject than to go to any other kind of entertainment. Now, this is no flattery on my part, but I mean exactly what I say, as I am not in the habit of saying what I don’t mean. Again, I thank you. Respectfully yours, F. W. Woolworth”. Letter on one page measures 7” x 10”. Minor toning, else near fine with a bold, clear signature. Sold for $938.
