Scarce Mt. Rushmore Photograph Signed by Its Designer Gutzon Borglum — 10” x 12.75”
Mt. Rushmore artist Gutzon Borglum signed photo. Photograph depicts workers constructing the representation of George Washington onto the legendary monument. Notoriously prickly, the prolific sculptor rarely lent his signature to photographs, with Borglum signed photographs depicting Mount Rushmore being particularly hard to find. Borglum signs the document ”Official, Gutzon Borglum” to bottom right in black ink. A ”Publishers Photo Service” copyright is stamped to verso. Measures 10” x 12.75”. Slight toning, otherwise near fine. Sold for $1,875.

Photo of Mount Rushmore prior to completion signed by its sculptor Gutzon Borglum. The Danish-American sculptor inscribes the road ieading to Mount Rushmore: “Sincerely / Gutzon Borglum / 1941″ in bold black ink. A letter of provenance is included from the grandson of the photo’s original recipient, Russell M. Arundel, who worked on Mt. Rushmore. Lot also includes the U.S. Park Service’s roster of Mount Rushmore workers from 1927-1941 on which Arundel’s name appears. Matte photo is backstamped Bell Photo, Rapid City, SD and measures 10.25″ x 13.75”. Mild creasing along left and right edges with a few small tears along the right edge, and light soiling to verso. In very good to near fine condition. Sold for $1,220.

Mt. Rushmore artist Gutzon Borglum large photo signed. Photo depicts the monument at nightfall, shot from an oblique angle. Inscribed at length to lower right, ”Greetings to you dear [illegible] in memory of a wonderful evening…Gutzon Borglum / Washington June 6 1929”. Matte photo measures 10.5” x 13.75”. Toning and pencil notations to verso, else near fine. From the personal collection of the son of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce manager, who participated in commissioning Borglum for another project.
Sold for $1,000.

Mt. Rushmore artist Gutzon Borglum large photo signed. Portrait of Borglum bears a sensitive inscription along the bottom edge of the image, ”To my dear friends – What are friends and who? Thare [sic] who understand and we believe love us – Ralph & Hazel Bradford / Affectionately Gutzon Borglum / Oct 22-1933 / Washington D.C.” Matte photo measures 10.5” x 13.75”. Toning and light creasing, else near fine. From the collection of the son of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce manager, who participated in commissioning Borglum for another project. Sold for $500.
