Confederate General James Longstreet War-Dated Autograph Letter Signed
Confederate General James Longstreet autograph letter signed. Dated 9 September 1861, letter to Colonel Thomas Jordan reads: ”…I herewith have the honor to enclose to you the Morning Report of the 4th Brigade / Very Respectfully…James Longstreet.” The 4th Brigade, 1st Corp was part of the Army of the Potomac, six months before it became the Army of Northern Virginia. Single page with docketing to verso. Measures 7.75” x 6”. Mounted to a paper border to an overall size of 8.25” x 6.25. Pencil notations, toning and a crease, else near fine. Sold for $1,220.

Jefferson Davis Signed CDV Photo
Confederate President, Jefferson Davis signed CDV portrait photo. Signed boldly in black fountain pen, ”Jeffn Davis”. Photograph was taken by C.R. Rees & Bro. in Richmond, Virginia, capital of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. CDV measures 2.375” x 4”. Trimmed right edge and some foxing, otherwise near fine. Sold for $2,250.
Jefferson Davis autograph letter signed. Letter dated 25 July 1887 is addressed to Col. Snead and reads in part, ”…many thanks for your…invitation to attend the Reunion of the Survivors of the 3d Georgia Regiment…pertaining to ‘men who still love the cause for which they fought’…” 2pp. letter on two delicate sheets of ruled linen stationery measures 5.5” x 9”. Pencil notation with Davis’ name to verso of one sheet, and slight separation at fold intersections, else near fine. Sold for $1,628.
General Robert E. Lee autograph endorsement signed, commending the performance of a Major Robert M. Grinnell, who was twice wounded in battle during the Civil War and returned to combat each time afterwards. Composed on 18 April 1865, Lee writes in full, ”It gives me pleasure to express my Concurrence in the Commendation bestowed by Genl Heth on Major Grinnell. His Conduct & deportment has been always admirable. / R E Lee / Genl / 18 Apl ’65”. Document is likely one of the last times that Robert E. Lee signed off with the rank of General, here at the close of the Civil War. Endorsement measures 3.25” x 7.75” as folded. Strip of toning to right side and separation starting along fold line affecting date; very good condition with clear handwriting. Endorsement is accompanied by Major General Henry Heth’s commendation of Major Grinnell, which measures 7.75” x 9.625”. Both documents are professionally affixed to mat in a presentation measuring 27” x 27”. Sold for $2,625.
