Cap Anson Autograph Sold

Cap Anson was a Baseball Hall of Famer who played between 1876 and 1897 for the National Chicago team, the White Stockings, which later become the Chicago Cubs. Anson was a first baseman, third baseman and catcher who hit at least .300 during 20 years of his career and led the league in hitting for four seasons. Anson had remarkable longevity in his career and was still part of the regular lineup during his final season. He retired at age 45 and during the span of his career had an impressive 3435 hits and 1999 runs. Upon his retirement he became a coach for Chicago and the New York Gothams. Anson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.

Chicago Cubs Adrian “Cap” Anson Autograph Letter Signed — 1906

Famed Chicago Cubs first basemen and manager, Adrian “Cap” Anson autograph letter signed, dated 1906. Letter, on “Chicago City Clerk’s Office” letterhead, discusses business dealings and reads in part, “…I was not successful in getting the store on Madison St. for a saloon…” Letter is on 3pp., signed, “A.C. Anson” in black ink. Signature is slightly smeared, presumably by Anson’s hand. Auction Near fine condition. With COA from PSA/DNA. Sold for $5,910.

Wilbert Robinson Scarce 1903 Baltimore Orioles Autograph Letter Signed — ”…have him come right away and report at the Ball Grounds…” — With PSA/DNA COA

Scarce autograph letter signed by Wlbert Robinson dated June 22 1903 to baseball scout George Booker, regarding player Joe Curtis who briefly played for the Orioles under Robinson in 1903. Written on Robinson’s bowling alley ”The Diamond,” letterhead listing him as the proprietor, letter includes the original mailing envelope with the return address of the Baltimore Orioles baseball club handwritten by Robinson. In full with Robinson’s style of little punctuation: ”Dear Sir, Mr. [Ned] Hanlon handed me your letter about Curtis and asked me to write you and have you send Curtis up here to Baltimore for trial we will be giving him $75.00 per month to start with and of course if he is able to fill the bill we will be only glad to pay him what his is worth tell the young man if Team no use him I will place him on some good club for a while until Team use him have him come right away and report at the Ball Grounds.” Letter measures 5.75” x 9”. Top third of letter separated at fold, else near fine. With PSA/DNA COA. Sold for $4,915.

Ty Cobb 8pp. Autograph Letter Signed — “…this year will be a bust for they have no player to induct due to a phoney rule that I have been crusading in my way to have amended…”

Ty Cobb autograph letter signed with content on the 1960 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies at Cooperstown, which was ultimately cancelled as there was no player to induct that year; this was the last of only three times that no player was inducted. Dated 18 June 1960, Cobb writes to his future personal assistant Marie Quinn: “…If I go to Cooperstown for June 27, I feel I should not per my pain…if they [his doctors] consent, then I will make trip to Cooperstown, for I have received letters from Hall of Fame people insisting, for to date only three Hall of Famers have stated they would go – this year will be a bust for they have no player to induct due to a phoney rule that I have been crusading in my way to have amended they did not so no elected player Etc. don’t want them to feel if I do not go they might think I am piqued Etc. which decidedly would not be the case, I have fully explained to them my physical condition, so I might not go, up to doctors in Atlanta if I do go…Ty”. Written on front sides of eight sheets of Cobb’s personal stationery measuring 6″ x 7″. Also with original mailing envelope. Overall in very good to near fine condition. Sold for $968.
