Christopher Mathewson (August 12, 1880 – October 7, 1925), nicknamed “Big Six”, “The Christian Gentleman”, “Matty”, and “The Gentleman’s Hurler”, was a Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher, who played 17 seasons with the New York Giants. He stood 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m) tall and weighed 195 pounds (88 kg). He was among the most dominant pitchers in baseball history, and ranks in the all-time top 10 in several key pitching categories, including wins, shutouts, and ERA. In fact, he is the only professional pitcher in history to rank in the top 10 both in career wins and career ERA, if taking 19th-century pitchers’ statistics into account. Otherwise, both Mathewson and Walter Johnson would hold that distinction. In 1936, Mathewson was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of its first five members.

Christy Mathewson autograph book of the book he authored, “Won in the Ninth.” New York: R.J. Bodmer Company: 1910. First edition presentation copy signed by Mathewson on a bookplate affixed to the interior cover. Copy is numbered 498 and presented to Robert Hughes; Mathewson signs below in dark ink. This fictional tale by the New York Giants pitcher also features a special instructional section on pitching technique. Illustrated hardcover with pine green cloth runs 298pp. Corners, edges and backstrip top and bottom show wear. Slight scuffing to cover image. Frontispiece tissue guard missing. Signature shows only slight smudging to the “C”. Binding remains tight. Overall very good condition. Very rare Christy Mathewson signed book. Sold for $9,768.
