Thomas Wolfe Signed First Printing, First Edition of “Look Homeward, Angel” — Signed in 1929, the Year of Publication
Thomas Wolfe signed first printing, first edition of his first novel and masterpiece, “Look Homeward, Angel”. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1929. Wolfe signs the front free endpaper in the year of publication, “To a well-wisher / Thomas Wolfe / Oct 30, 1929”. With first printing points present: “greek” rather than “Greek” on page 308, line 26, and “staioned” rather than “stationed” on page 506, line 23.
A literary high point of 20th century fiction, the New York Times Book Review wrote of “Look Homeward, Angel” on 27 October 1929, just a few days before Wolfe’s inscription, “Here is a novel of the sort one is too seldom privileged to welcome. It is a book of great drive and vigor, of profound originality, of rich and variant color…Mr. Wolfe has a great gift-the ability to find in simple events and in humble, unpromising lives the whole meaning and poetry of human existence.” Octavo book measuring 5.5″ x 7.75″ remains in attractive condition with bright gilt lettering upon navy blue boards. Light shelf wear, particular to spine edges and corners. Overall in very good plus condition. Sold for $1,250.
The following are some signed books we sold:
Rare first edition signed by George Bernard Shaw of what he called his ”magnum opus”, ”The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Socialism and Capitalism”. London: Constable and Co., 1928. Shaw signs the half-title page, ”Inscribed to / W. Harold Dans / G. Bernard Shaw / 24th Nov. 1928”. Shaw worked on the ”Guide” for four years, beginning in 1924, during which time he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. First edition is housed in original dust jacket with 15 price. Also with an order form for the book and two publisher advertisements, calling it ”Mr. Shaw’s declaration of faith-political, social and ethical”. Measures 6.5” x 9.5”. Light soiling and chipping to dust jacket, but with no substantial paper loss; in very good condition. Beautiful gilt adorned book in Art Nouveau style is very good to near fine, with light soiling to gilt top edge. Sold for $3,125.

Exceedingly rare Mark Twain signed first edition, first printing of ”Eve’s Diary.” London and New York: Harper and Brothers: 1906. Inscription on front pastedown reads: ”To Mrs. K.C. Tapley with compliments of The Author / Clothes make the man, but they do not improve the woman. Yours Truly, Mark Twain / Feb/08”. Twain’s inscription is a playful response to critics who condemned the ”pornographic” illustrations throughout the book, which depicted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. All fifty-five pen and ink illustrations by Lester Ralph are present as are first printing points, ”Published June, 1906” on copyright page and ”London and New York” on title page. 5.5” x 8” book is in very good condition, in original red-cloth boards. Minor foxing throughout and toning to edges. Three photographs of Twain are also affixed to the book on the front free end paper and title page, the first of which is captioned, ”Died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday April 21/10 at Redding, Conn, US”. Housed in a satin-lined slipcase. Scarce signed copy of Mark Twain’s lesser known masterpiece, showcasing the author’s beloved wit. Sold for $4,915.
