Theodore Roosevelt Autograph as President; Theodore Roosevelt Autograph in Copy of His Complete Works — 15 Volumes

“The Complete Works of Theodore Roosevelt” executive edition with Theodore Roosevelt autograph as President, published by P.F. Collier & Son: New York: 1899. The front free endpaper of the first volume bears the President’s autograph dedication, “With good wishes of / Theodore Roosevelt / Nov 7th 1904”. Complete 15-volume set comprises volumes titled in part, “American Ideals”, “The Wilderness Hunter”, “Hunting the Grisly and Other Sketches”, “The Winning of the West”, “The Naval War of 1812”, “The Rough Riders” and “Addresses and State Papers”. Bound in navy blue cloth boards with contrasting print lettering to spines. Each volume measures 5.75″ x 8″. Volumes show a great deal of loss to the print lettering on the spine as typical of this set. Light surface loss to exterior edges and toning to page edges. The volume “Presidential Addresses & State Papers” has a tear to its first page and signed first volume shows some light staining to boards, else lot is near fine overall. Sold for $5,093.

Booker T. Washington Signed First Printing of His First Major Publication, “The Future of the American Negro” — Inscribed to Massachusetts Notable Arthur T. Lyman

Booker T. Washington signed first printing of “The Future of the American Negro”, the first major publication of the Civil Rights leader. Boston: Small, Maynard & Company, 1899 first printing, with matching dates on title and copyright pages, and with the following printed on copyright page: “Press of / George H. Ellis, Boston, U.S.A.” Washington inscribes the front pastedown, “To Mr. Arthur T. Lyman, from / Booker T. Washington / May 8, 1900.” The recipient is likely Arthur T. Lyman, Jr., related in lineage to Ralph Waldo Emerson, a prominent Massachusetts Democrat of his day, and mayor of Waltham, Massachusetts. Written approximately 20 years after founding Tuskegee University, “The Future of the American Negro” was Washington’s first major publication, preceding his autobiography “Up from Slavery” by two years. Volume in original red boards with gilt lettering measures 5″ x 7.75″. Minor shelf wear and toning to interior. Expert restoration including recasing front hinge. An important signed first edition in the history of Civil Rights. Sold for $4,200.

Theodore Roosevelt Autograph in “African Game Trails” Limited Edition

“African Game Trails,” with Theodore Roosevelt autograph clearly on the limitation page. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons: 1910. Two volumes. Signed limited first edition, number 204 of 500 copies, has 50 illustrations, including photographs, photogravures, drawings and a map. This work was the result of Roosevelt’s ten-month hunting trip through central and northern Africa, begun after leaving the White House in March 1909. In original brown cloth boards with leather trim and gilt spine lettering, book measures 6.75″ x 10″. Boards and spine have some wear, else very good condition. Very collectible Theodore Roosevelt autograph.   Sold for $3,693.
