149 Letter Lot & 3 Diaries by Soldier in the 148th New York Infantry
Extracts include “…a dead Rebel lay on the ground, one we had killed Friday or Saturday. It looked pretty rough, his face was black as my boot, flies all over his face…” & “…lost 62 killed and wounded…Capt. Griswold is severely wounded in the shoulder, knocked the bone all to pieces, has had the socket bone taken out…” & “…Our loss since we came here in killed and wounded is about 180 or 190. We have not half the men we started with…” & “…all at once the Rebs opened on us…Shells burst all about us and we had to retreat across an open field they had complete command of…” & “…they were met by a perfect shower of bullets…I expected to be hit but felt cool throughout…” & “…a charge was made. We gained the Fort. A little later in the morning the niggers made a charge. They behaved very badly. They not only retreated, but was a regular stampede…” & “…The Rebels made two terrific assaults on our lines and were repulsed with a great slaughter both times…” & “…You ought to see the dead Rebels in front to our lines, they are piled right up. They are worse than ours were at Cold Harbor and Petersburg…” Sold for $28,000.
Receipt with itemized expenses incurred by Lt. Col. William Barret Travis for provisions he bought to arm and feed his Alamo soldiers. Receipt is signed by General John R. Jones, executor of Travis’ estate, listing 27 items for a total of $143 that Travis bought from January through March 1836, while under assault from the Mexican Army. It was in February 1836 that Travis wrote to his fellow Texans: ”I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna…The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily…I shall never surrender or retreat.” Addressed to the Republic of Texas, document reads: ”…the Estate Wm Barret Travis…1836 Jany 21st Paid for flour $5.00 / Tin ware 2.50 / Twine 1.00 / Leggins 3.00 & Spurs 2.00 / Flag 5.00 & Powder Flask 1.00…” continuing, ”…The foregoing is taken from the original entries in Col. Travis’ handwriting made in a small black morocco bound book with his name in it. The deceased Wm. Barret Travis has other claims for money expended horses &c while in the army as will appear by the books of the Quarter Master Jackson…” Jones notes the document was, ”…filed Dec. 18, 1837.” An endorsement by Francis Lubbock reads, ”Approved 21st Dec 1837, Francis R. Lubbock, Controller.” 2pp. document on a single sheet, measures 7.75” x 9.75”. Toning, circular stain to upper left corner and light show-through from writing on opposite side, else near fine condition. An incredible document honoring the heroism and self-sacrifice of the Alamo commander. Sold for $20,133.

Civil War-dated handwritten letter serving as an official notice of General Lee’s resignation, and ultimately the end of the war, dated 9 April 1865. Sent by telegraph from the ”Head Quarters Armies of the U.S.”, letter is addressed to Confederate General Cadmus Wilcox from Confederate General William Loring and is signed by an aide to Loring. Letter reads in full: ”Genl. Willcox — The following received Head Quarters Armies U.S. Appomattox C.H. April 9th, 1865 — Genl Lee this afternoon surrendered his entire army to Lieut. Genl. Grant; officers and privates to retain private horses, arms and baggage; officers and men to be permitted to return to their homes, but not be disturbed by the U.S. authorities as long as they observe the laws where they reside; all public property to be turned over to Ordinance and Quartermasters Departments. Remnant of Lee’s Army surrendered is about 30,000. – April 10, surrender is complete this morning; munitions of war turned over to the U.S. and Genl. Grant leaves for City Point at eleven o’clk this morning. The Army of Northern Virginia is no more!!! (sgd) Schemerhorn”. Card-style 2pp. letter has handwriting on pages 1 and 3. Some toning, foxing and two 1” tears along a horizontal fold. Very good condition overall. Scarce. Sold for $10,780.
Original Vicksburg U.S. Plate From ’63 Found on Battlefield
Well-kept Union army cartridge box plate, with the letters “US” die-cut on sheet brass face, found on the Antietam battleground in 1895. With autograph letter signed by original owner, Charley Stick, explaining that the plate was purchased from a “tramp” by the name of Henry Miller in exchange for a piece of tobacco. Humorous letter reads in full: “…This plate was found by Henry Miller, a tramp, upon the battle fields of Antietam, July 4th, 1895. I gave him a small piece of chewing tobacco for it. I received the plate on Sunday evening July 14, 1895. This shall be a remembrance of the battle and also of the tramp Henry Miller.” Signature reads: “Charley Franklin Stick / July 14, 1895”. With note on verso reading, “U.S. Plate / Found July 4, 1895”. Letter, measuring 5″ x 8″, has two distinct horizontal folds and several creases, with even toning throughout. Very good condition overall. Plate, measuring 3.5″ x 2″, has sparsely patinated face, numerous dents along edge and an ink inscription, presumably penned by Stick, which reads, “July 14, 1895 / Miller / Found July 4, 1895”. Very good condition. Sold for $2,500.
