Fred Haise signed 20″ x 16″ photo of the Apollo 13 lunar module Aquarius, the astronauts’ “lifeboat” that returned them safely to Earth after the damaged service module was jettisoned. Haise writes the famous quote from the mission in silver ink, “‘Houston, we’ve had a problem here!’ / Fred Haise / Apollo 13 LMP”. Glossy photo is in near fine condition. The following are some Apollo 13 items we sold:
American flag flown aboard the near-disastrous Apollo 13 mission to the moon. Printed 4” x 6” fabric flag accompanied the astronauts on the Apollo 13 mission, the third of the Apollo lunar missions, that was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded, though each of the astronauts returned safely to earth. Flag is affixed to an official NASA certificate with the Apollo 13 printed insignia and reading: ”This flag was on board Apollo XIII during its flight and Emergency Return to Earth.” Certificate is signed, ”Jim Lovell”, ”Jack Swigert” and ”Fred Haise” and is inscribed, ”To Ron / With best wishes from the Apollo XVIII Crew”. Certificate measures 9.5” x 11.5” and is framed to an overall size of 15” x 17”. Some minor show-through of glue from verso of flag in four spots and minor toning to certificate, else near fine. Sold for $4,153.
Apollo 13 official NASA photo signed by each astronaut on the famed mission. 8” x 10” glossy photo depicts the 11 April 1970 launch of Apollo 13 spacecraft. Two days after the launch, an oxygen tank exploded and the crew was forced to abandon the mission and fly back to Earth in the dangerously compromised spacecraft. Signed boldly in black marker along right side, ”Jim Lovell”, ”Jack Swigert” and ”Fred Haise”. Minor toning to mat, else fine. With an LOA from Swigert’s sister. Sold for $2,520.
Apollo 13 crew-signed NASA photo. The trio of astronauts smiling here in business suits each sign the official NASA picture. Signed by commander ”Jim Lovell”, command module pilot ”Jack Swigert” and lunar module pilot ”Fred Haise” in black felt tip upon the Moon globe in the foreground. Two days after Apollo 13’s launch on 11 April 1970, an oxygen tank exploded and the crew was forced to abandon the mission and fly back to Earth in the dangerously compromised spacecraft. A dedication, likely by Swigert, to the upper left reads: ”To the Coles”. Semi-matte photo measures 10” x 8”. Toning and album adhesive residue to verso, else fine. Sold for $1,420.
