Robert Crumb Autograph Letter Signed 1993
ALS from underground artist and social satirist Robert Crumb. Written in ink and dated 9 February 1993, letter reads in part: “…Tell me about life in Montana. Could I live there? All I require is A.) A reliable Postal Service, B.) Access to art supplies C.) Local populace that is at least ‘Tolerant’ of eccentrics – They don’t have to love me, as long as they don’t build up a case against me, start thinking I’m a child pornographer, because of what I do, how I look, how I live… I’m only interested in case we ever decide to move back to that God-Forsaken land, the ‘Etats Unis’…” Crumb also writes regarding his opinion of the military and his admiration for German cartoonist, Wilhelm Busch: “Your military career sounds unbelievable…I was an instant 4-F, and so relieved to be ‘Unfit to serve’…The happiest day of my life was the day in late 1962 when I walked out of the U.S. Army building in downtown Cleveland with ‘4-F’ stamped on my draft card…My father was a 20-Year-Man in the fuckin’ Marine Corps. In some strange twist of Karmic Irony, all three of his sons grew up to be gnarled, twisted queeros…it kinda broke the old man’s heart…Maybe a couple years in boot camp would’ve ‘Made a man’ outa me…here I am, almost fifty years old, still a fearfull adolescent wimp…I too love Wilhelm Busch…Why does Busch remain so obscure in America, you ask? Foolish question…Why does everything Culturally Interesting…remain obscure in America…R. Crumb / P.S. I didn’t ‘Get’ your questions concerning what I thought my art was all about…” Single page letter measures 8.25″ x 11.75″. Creasing and edgewear, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $599.
