Sell Your Copy of Summa Pisanella
Here is a copy of Summa Pisanella we have sold:
Rare Extant 1479 Copy of “Summa Pisanella,” the Dictionary of Sins — in Original “Chained” Binding
Very rare incunabulum (pre-1500 extant text) of the “Summa Pisanella,” the most important and complete dictionary of sins. Conceived by theologian Nicolo da Osimo, who devotes each chapter to one particular sin. The chapter on inebriation, for example, is quite interesting (and perhaps useful): it needn’t be considered a sin if it’s caused by low quality wine. Inebriation is, however, a venial fault if it’s the consequence of a social gathering, and a mortal sin if one plans in advance to get drunk. Book is bound in its original “chained” binding and, as such, is quite scarce. Book owners used such chains to bind important books to their desks in the earliest years of printing; chained books are scarce in and of themselves. Two other works are added as addenda to this “Summa,” the “Canones Poenitentiales” by Astesano da Asti and the “Consilia Contra Ludeos Fenerantes” by Alessandro Nievo, the latter of which is a collection of legal opinions about usury, and was used to defend the expulsion of Jews from the city of Vicenza in 1486. Book’s text is in Latin and measures approximately 6″ x 8.5″. Bound in calf on wooden boards with blind toolings; spine rebound in the 18th century. Some dampstaining, particularly at the end of the book, and notes in Latin to the margins of a few pages. Overall in very good condition. A fascinating text both on the history of the church, printing and thoughts on moral relativism. Sold for $6,672.
