Paul Vernon Hornung (December 23, 1935-) (HB/S/PK) is one of three NFL players to win the Heisman Trophy, be taken first overall in the NFL Draft and be inducted into the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame (O.J. Simpson, Earl Campbell). Hornung was a triple threat out of the backfield for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in the early 1950s, playing quarterback, running back and receiver, as well as defensive back on the other side of the ball. The “Golden Boy”, named for his blond locks and scoring prowess, was one of the elite scoring leaders during his college football era earning two All-America selections and winning the 1956 Heisman Trophy, becoming the only player to win the award on a losing team. The Green Bay Packers selected the big back with the Number 1 overall pick of the 1957 NFL Draft plugging him into a backfield that included Hall of Fame Bart Starr and All-Pro Babe Parilli. The extremely versatile Hornung took over place kicking duties immediately and came into his own as a rusher after his second season.
