Eddie Collins was a professional baseball player for the Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago White Sox between 1906 and 1930. Baseball statistician Bill James considers Collins to be the greatest second baseman according to his win shares. He was also a master of base stealing and is only one of five players to steal six bases in a single game, and did so twice in 1912. Known for his exceptional intelligence he is said to have studied the pitcher’s timing and tendencies gaining as much of an advantage for stealing bases. Collins was a strong hitter and had a career batting average of .333. During his playing career he was on six World Series winning teams, the American League MVP for 1914, four-time American League stolen base leader and stole 745 bases during his career. Collins also coached for the Athletics and was the General Manager of the Red Sox. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.
