Julia Ward Howe was a writer and social reformer who is perhaps best-known for penning “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” in 1861, which uses the music of “John Brown’s Body”. She later became active in causes such as women’s suffrage and abolitionism and co-founded various organizations including the New England Women’s Club and the New England Woman Suffrage Association. Two years before her death in 1910, she was the first woman inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
