A very good hitter and outfielder, Carlos Smith had a distinguished 12-year career playing for several minor league teams at different levels. In 1904 he was at bat an incredible 859 times, banging out 243 hits and batting .283 for the Seattle Siwashes in the A-rated Pacific Coast League. He had some other great seasons batting .322 for the Shreveport Pirates in 1909 and .401 for the Hattiesburg Woodpeckers in 1911. Smith was also a good defensive player, and even appeared as a pitcher on 13 occasions over his career. He managed several teams in the Cotton States League from 1911 to 1913.
