Harry David Brecheen (October 14, 1914 – January 17, 2004) pitched for his entire career in St. Louis with the Cardinals (1940, 1943-1948) and the Browns (1953), leading the Cardinals through the World War II era when Major League Baseball was depleted due to enlistment. Harry pitched both as a starter and in relief during his time with the Cardinals and won 15 or more games in five consecutive seasons (1944-1948). He led the National League In winning percentage (.789) in 1945 and in ERA (2.24), shutouts (7) and strikeouts (149) in 1948. Brecheen finished fifth in NL MVP voting and earned his second consecutive All-Star selection after posting a 20-7 record in 1948, narrowly missing out on pitching’s Triple Crown as Johnny Sain won 24 games. Harry pitched in three World Series winning the 1944 title over the cross-town Browns and the 1946 title over the heavily favored Boston Red Sox. He is the first left-hander to win three World Series games when he beat the Red Sox in Games 2, 6 and 7. Harry Brecheen finished his career with a 133-92 record, 240 starts, 125 complete games, 25 shutouts and 18 saves, 901 strikeouts and a 2.92 career ERA over his 12-year career.
