Edward “Fast Eddie” Giacomin (June 6, 1939-) was nearly deprived of a hockey career as a teenager when the family stove exploded in his face, causing second- and third-degree burns on his legs and arms, severely jeopardizing his dream of playing professional hockey. Eddie’s determination and will helped get him back to playing shape, despite doctor’s predictions of his career demise. In 1959, he signed with the Providence Reds where he played for five seasons posting a 107-119-10 record. In 1965 he played 35 games with the New York Rangers competing with Cesare Maniago for the number one position. Giacomin took over the staring goaltender job in his sophomore campaign and led the NHL in wins (30), shutouts (9) and minutes played (3,981). He led the NHL the next two seasons in wins and minutes played for the next three. He also led the Rangers back to the playoffs for the first time in five years. The Rangers made the postseason for nine consecutive years and in 1971-72, Giacomin took the blueshirts to the Stanley Cup Finals where the Boston Bruins bested them. Giacomin was named the 1971 Norris Trophy winner, with fellow Rangers netminder Gilles Villemure, after posting a 27-10-7 record with a league high eight shutouts. He played 13 years in the NHL with the Rangers (1965-1976) and the Detroit Red Wings (1975-1978). Eddie was named to two NHL All-Star First Teams and played in six NHL All-Star Games. Eddie Giacomin finished his career with a 289-209-96 record in 609 career regular season games with a 2.82 goals against average and 54 shutouts. In the playoffs, he added 29 wins and 35 losses with a 2.81 GAA and one shutout. Ed Giacomin was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
