Professional tennis player Maria Sharapova was born in the Soviet Union in 1987 and began playing tennis at four years old. Her remarkable talent was noted and her family relocated to the U.S. in 1994 so she could train professionally at the prestigious IMG Academy in Florida. Sharapova first appeared in the tennis scene in 2000 when she won the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships at the age of 13 for the 16 division. At the age of 14 Sharapova competed in her first professional tennis match of the Women’s Tennis Association and played her first full season in 2003 and reached the top 50 WTA rankings by the end of 2003. Sharapova became the number 1 world ranked player of the WTA in August of 2005 and since then has been ranked number 1 four other occasions for a total of 21 weeks. Sharapova also competed in the 2012 London Olympics where she earned a silver medal in the women’s singles event. Besides tennis, Sharapova keeps busy with a mentoring program for female entrepreneurs.

Arthur Ashe’s American Tennis Association 1962 trophy. Impressive silver trophy was awarded to young Ashe as the winner of the men’s singles competition in the National Championships of 1962. The American Tennis Association was founded in the early twentieth century by a group of African American professionals. At the time of his win here, he was a just a student at Sumner High School in St. Louis, Missouri. The very next year Ashe became the first African American ever selected for the U.S. Davis Cup Team and was awarded a tennis scholarship to UCLA. Stately trophy cup is engraved, ”ATA / National Championships – 1962 / Central State College – Wilberforce, Ohio / Men’s Singles Winner / Trophy Donated By / Pepsi-Cola Company”. Poole Silver is stamped to the underside. Measures 10.25” in diameter, 11” in height and weighs 6 pounds, 2 ounces. Foot diameter measures 6”. Trophy comes with a removable metal insert, likely for use as a liner when trophy cup serves as a floral vase. Rust and loss of metal to the bottom of the liner, with moderate tarnishing to interior of trophy itself, else near fine. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe’s widow. Sold for $3,775.

The tennis racket used by Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2005, famously smashed by Serena after losing the first set in the first round against her childhood friend Angela Haynes, before ultimately winning the match. Wilson tennis racket is also signed by Serena in red marker – visible on the inside of the throat of the racket, which she did on the court before gifting the racket to a fan. Making a comeback after being injured, Serena played at Wimbledon in 2005 after having reached the final in the previous three years, winning in 2002 and 2003 but losing in 2004. The hard fought contest to advance in the 2005 tournament is viscerally evident in this powerfully smashed racket.
