Maharaja Duleep Singh was the youngest son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the last Maharaja of the Sikh empire. He began ruling at the age of five in 1843, but the Sikhs were overthrown in 1849 and their kingdom became part of British India. Duleep Singh was banished to England at age 15 where he was well-accepted and became friends with Queen Victoria. In England he received a plentiful pension and Queen Victoria was the godmother to many of his children. Duleep Singh lived most of his life in England, but moved to France near the end of his life after his request for a larger pension was denied.

Maharaja Duleep Singh Autograph Letter Signed — “…I shall be happy to shoot with you on the 14…”

Maharaja Duleep Singh autograph letter signed as the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. Letter dated 9 December 1870 reads, “Dear [illegible], I shall be happy to shoot with you on the 14 as stated in your letter and will try to be there in time but should I not succeed I will never forgive you if you will wait for me at all / [illegible] Very Truly Yours / Duleep Singh”. 2pp. letter on a sheet of card-style stationery measures 4.5″ x 7″. Creasing and pencil notations to verso, else near fine. Sold for $1,470.
