Confederate General Leonidas Polk Civil-War Dated Autograph Letter Signed, to General John C. Breckenridge — “…I thought myself very explicit in asking…”
Leonidas Polk autograph letter signed, datelined “Hdqr. Polks Corps, Shelby Tenn” on 2 April 1863. Letter is addressed to to General John C. Breckinridge who served as Vice President under President Buchanan before becoming a Confederate General in the Civil War. Letter discusses a report from General Braxton Bragg and reads in part, “…I send you a paper received today through the Adjunct Genl Officer of the Army at Tullahoma. It is not the paper I asked Capt. Robertson to send me and I thought myself very explicit in asking him for the Report you wished – his report to General Bragg. I have promptly asked him for a copy of that report. It shall be sent you so soon as received.” Signed “L. Polk”. Letter on one page measures 8″ x 12″. Minor toning and folds throughout, pencil notations to top left, and and endorsement to verso. Near fine overall. Sold for $1,954.
Civil War Furlough Request Signed by Several Confederate Generals & Officers — Including Generals Leonidas Polk, Thomas C. Hindman, Braxton Bragg & Zacariah Deas
Civil War document uniquely signed by numerous Confederate Generals. 18 August 1863 document requests twenty days of furlough for a soldier, with the touching request written to the right half. Generals Leonidas Polk, Thomas C. Hindman, Braxton Bragg and Zacariah Deas lend their signatures to the left half of the document, approving the officer’s request. Also signed by Major Kinloch Falconer and others. Measures 12.5″ x 8.25″. Small tears to bottom and light wear. Very good. Sold for $910.
Confederate General Leonidas Polk Autograph Note Signed
Leonidas Polk autograph note signed, “L. Polk” to the bottom of an original telegram he received regarding supplies from a Capt. Mallory from Memphis in 1861. Polk writes a note to General Gideon Pillow, asking him to “write to me a reply”. South-Western Telegraph Co. telegram measures 5.5″ x 8.5″. Ink smudging throughout, including to signature, and mailing folds. Very good. Sold for $396.
