Ferdinand the Bull Cel Sold
Ferdinand the Bull is a 1938 Disney animated short film about a pacifist bull who, unlike his bull contemporaries, does not aspire to be in bullfights and instead prefers to smell flowers. The film is based on the 1936 Munro Leaf book The Story of Ferdinand. Some countries, including Sweden, air the film on Christmas Eve along with other Disney programs as part of their Christmas traditions.

Original animation cel from Disney’s 1938 short “Ferdinand the Bull”, featuring Ferdinand as a young calf in the opening scene of the film. A beloved Christmas film about a bull that refuses to fight, “Ferdinand the Bull” won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1938. Disney label on verso of frame reads “This is an original painting on celluloid, actually used in the Walt Disney Production of Ferdinand the Bull…Copyright 1938…Walt Disney Productions”. Visible portion of artwork measures 8.25″ square. Not examined out of frame, but appears in very good condition with no significant cracking to celluloid. Sold for $2,100.

On a Courvoisier background with partial paper overlay, and with Disney label on verso of mat confirming that the celluloid was used in the film. Cel measures 10.25″ x 8.75″, and Disney mat measures 18″ x 17.25″. Slight discoloration to background, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $1,500.

Original animation cel from Disney’s 1938 short “Ferdinand the Bull”, featuring Ferdinand with a flower on his nose, being pulled out of the bullring by two donkeys. Based upon the best selling children’s book, called by LIFE magazine “the greatest juvenile classic since ‘Winnie the Pooh'” about a bull unwilling to fight, “Ferdinand the Bull” won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1938. Celluloid is on a Courvoisier background, with both Disney and Courvoisier labels on verso confirming that the cel was used in the film. Cel measures 12″ x 9″, on mat measuring 19.625″ x 17.75. Some discoloration to upper left portion of background, otherwise near fine. Sold for $1,400.
