Following WWII Pablo Picasso spent the last part of his career working at Madoura Pottery in the South of France and living a more modest and relaxed lifestyle. During those years he created thousands of practical ceramic pieces that include plates, bowls, vases and pitchers. Our January 2019 auction includes one of his ceramic pitchers, Pablo Picasso Yan Barbu A R 513. Sold for $7,350.

Pablo Picasso terre de faience (earthenware) pitcher ”Yan Barbu” created at the famed Madoura pottery studio in the south of France, where Picasso collaborated the last 25 years of his life and created unique, playful pieces such as this. Painted pitcher in Picasso’s unmistakable style was created in 1963 in an edition of 300, numbered 109/300. Incised ”Edition Picasso”, also with both the Edition Picasso and Madoura stamps. Measures 10.375” tall. In very good condition with a nearly imperceptible chip on outside edge of foot. Number 513 in Alan Ramie’s ”Picasso, Catalogue of the Edited Ceramic Works, 1947-1971”. Sold for $7,350.

Pablo Picasso Terre de faience (earthenware) plate, “Visage no. 197” created at the famed Madoura pottery studio in the south of France, where Picasso collaborated the last 25 years of his life and created often playful pieces. Plate glazed in colors was created in 1963, numbered 443/500 and inscribed “No. 197 / Edition / Picasso / 443/500 / Madoura”. Measures 9.75″ in diameter. In very good plus condition with a few very small, nearly imperceptible scratches to the glaze. In literature: Alan Ramie 494. Sold for $13,500.
