Space & STS-1 Flown Memorabilia

The STS-1 mission launched the first space shuttle as part of NASA’s Space Shuttle program in April of 1981. The main objectives of the STS-1 mission were to have a safe launch and return of the shuttle and crew and study the conduct of the shuttle’s components including orbiter, rocket boosters and external tank.

We at Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold the following STS-1 flown gold Robbins Medal in for $25,150. Please see details below:

Gold Robbins Medal #15F, Flown on Columbia STS-1 — Owned by Astronaut Shannon Lucid

Gold Robbins medal flown on Columbia flight STS-1, owned by astronaut Shannon Lucid, veteran of six space shuttle and two Mir missions, and the Chief Scientist of NASA in the early 2000s. 10K gold Robbins medal is marked 15F on rim, one of only 24 gold Robbins medals flown on the very first Space Shuttle mission. The 10K and Robbins hallmarks also appear on rim. Reverse of medal features the names of the astronauts along with ”Launched / April 12, 1981 / Landed / April 14, 1981 / RW23 Edwards AFB”, and the front features the Columbia mission insignia in relief. Medal measures 1.5” in diameter, housed in its original Robbins medal case. Near fine condition. With an LOA from Shannon Lucid. Sold for $24,150.

Jack Swigert’s Personally Owned Columbia STS-1 Flown Silver Robbins Medal, Serial Number 106

Columbia STS-1 flown sterling silver Robbins medal, serial number 106, as one of only 111 flown and 359 minted. As the first manned, orbital flight in the NASA Space Shuttle missions, the Columbia orbited the Earth 37 times during its 54.5-hour mission which launched on 12 April 1981. Obverse features mission insignia and each astronaut’s last name, “Young / Crippen”. Verso features launch and reentry dates again with each astronaut’s full name circumscribed. Serial number “106F” is engraved along edge. Housed in original Robbins plastic case with serial number sticker to bottom. Fine. With an LOA from Jack Swigert’s sister. Sold for $4,200.

Space-Flown U.S. Flag From the Columbia STS-1 Mission

United States flag flown in space on NASA’s STS-1 mission, the first of NASA’s Space Shuttle program. Flag measures 5.75” x 4” and comes affixed to official NASA certificate featuring color photos of Columbia, mission insignia and a printed dedication to Arthur J. Carraway which begins: ”This flag was flown aboard Space Shuttle ‘Columbia’ (STS-1) April 12-14, 1981.” Measures 8.5” x 11” overall. Light toning to certificate, small bit of discoloration to upper left and show-through from adhesive to flag. Very good condition. Sold for $938.

American Flag Flown in Space Aboard Columbia STS-1

U.S. flag flown in space aboard the Columbia on NASA’s very first space shuttle mission. This ”Stars and Bars” orbited Earth 36 times in the shuttle. Flag is mounted to a certificate bearing mission insignia and photos of the spacecraft, along with a printed statement that reads: ”Presented to Raymond L. Clark / This flag was flown aboard Space Shuttle ‘Columbia’ (STS-1) April 12-14, 1981. It is presented to you in recognition of the significant contribution you made to the success of the mission.” Flag measures 5.75” x 4”. Certificate measures 8.5” x 11”. Toning to certificate, else near fine. Sold for $750.

Space-Flown ”Thermal Tile” Material From The Outer Lining of Space Shuttle Columbia — Flown on The STS-1 Mission in 1981

Space-flown thermal tile from the exterior of Space Shuttle Columbia’s STS-1 mission. Thermal tile acrylic material is encased in a lucite block, displayed with certificates identifying it as, ”This is a segment of a thermal tile which protected the Space Shuttle Orbiter ‘Columbia’ (STS-1) from the heat of re-entry on its first flight April 12-14, 1981.” Another sign dedicates the piece to astronaut Robert F. Overmyer, veteran of missions STS-5 and STS-51-B. Lucite block measures 3.75” x 2.75” x 1” thick. Tiny piece of tile measures .5” x .5”. Fine condition. Sold for $625.

Space-Flown U.S. Flag From the Columbia STS-1 Mission

United States flag flown in space on NASA’s STS-1 mission, the first of NASA’s Space Shuttle program. Flag measures 5.75” x 4” and comes affixed to official NASA certificate featuring color photos of Columbia, mission insignia and a printed dedication to Richard Benson, Jr. which begins: ”This flag was flown aboard Space Shuttle ‘Columbia’ (STS-1) April 12-14, 1981.” Measures 8.5” x 11” overall. Light toning to certificate, crease on right side and staining from adhesive to flag. Very good condition. Sold for $625.

NASA Achievement Medal & Certificate for the Columbia STS-1 Mission — Medallion Made of Metal Taken From the Shuttle Itself

NASA recognition award from the first flight of space shuttle Columbia, STS-1, comprising both the certificate and a medallion made of metal taken from the spacecraft. Medal features mission insignia, the date of April 1981 and the names of the crew John Young and Bob Crippen on the obverse, and upon the reverse, text reading, ”Thank you for your contribution toward making the world’s first orbital flight of the Space Shuttle STS-1 possible. We would like you to have this memento made, in part, of metal taken from the Columbia. / NASA”. Medal measures 1.5” in diameter and weighs half an ounce, or 15 grams. Some adhesive residue, else near fine. Medal had originally been affixed to the certificate, which is dedicated to John E. Hankinson. Certificate measures 8.5” x 11”. Some surface loss to upper left and also to verso from mounting. Very good. Sold for $275.

Columbia Space Shuttle Commemorative Medallion — Made of Aluminum Taken From the Columbia STS-1 Mission, The First Manned Orbital Flight of the Space Shuttle

NASA medallion made of metal taken from the Columbia space shuttle to commemorate the STS-1 mission, the first manned orbital flight of the space shuttle. Affixed to an official NASA ”First Shuttle Achievement Award”, medallion measures 1.5” in diameter and depicts the shuttle with ”Columbia”, ”April 1981” and signatures of pilot Crippen and commander Young embossed on the coin. Nicely framed to an overall size of 11.25” x 14.25”. Minor toning to award; coin in near mint condition. Near fine. Sold for $219.
