Sell Your Dick Calkins Art

Dick Calkins was a comic artist who originally served in the United States Army Air Service as a pilot. He is perhaps best remembered as the first artist that worked on the Buck Rogers strip. Buck Rogers was a character from the science fiction novella Armageddon 2419 A.D. written by Philip Francis Nowlan. The strip was published daily and ran from 1929 to 1967. Calkins was also the illustrator and co-creator, along with aviator Lester J. Maitland, for the comic strip Skyroads, which focused on a variety of aviation characters and storylines.

Dick Calkins Buck Rogers Comic Strip Signed

Dick Calkins “Buck Rogers” bond promotion comic strip original art circa 1940s. Buck Rogers receives an urgent call-to-arms in this outstanding wartime bond promotion. This four-panel beauty features great shots of Buck, including him flying over a futuristic city with his jet-pack. This historic piece has excellent crossover potential for World War II collectors, as well as being a fascinating artifact of the time. The artwork measures 12″ x 11″ and is in excellent condition. Excellent Buck Rogers comic art and a fine piece of Dick Calkins comic art. Sold for $2,350.

“Terry and the Pirates” Original Comic Strip by Milton Caniff From 1936 — The Dragon Lady Has “Her Fun” by Drugging the “Handsome American”

“Terry and the Pirates” original comic strip hand-drawn by Milton Caniff entitled “The Lady Must Have Her Fun”. In this strip published 3 October 1936 shortly after the series debut, the Dragon Lady drugs the “handsome American” (the character Pat Ryan) to “see the American dog squirm a bit!” With Chicago Tribune label on second panel. Strip is highlighted with turquoise wash (for shading) and inscribed by Caniff along the bottom margin, “To Graeme MacLeod with my best wishes Milton Caniff”. Measures 22.75″ x 7″. Light soiling and toning, and separation starting along center fold. Overall very good condition. Sold for $4,000.

Excellent Content ”Li’l Abner” 2-Panel Comic Strip Hand-Drawn & Signed by Al Capp — Featuring Abner, Mammy, Soft-Hearted John & Shmoos — Classic Capp Encapsulating His Shmoo Theory

Al Capp hand drawn ”Li’l Abner” comic strip featuring Shmoos. 2-panel strip from 9 September 1948 depicts Abner dining on a plate of the cooked Shmoo meat Mammy is dishing out in the kitchen, surrounded by living Shmoos, while shopkeeper Soft-Hearted John storms in ranting about his business being down since the townspeople are getting everything they need from Shmoos, as explicated by Abner, ”Shmoos does ev’rything! They gives milk, aigs, meat, an’ th’ eyes makes fine suspender buttons!…Nobody needs money no more!” Capp uses his Shmoo creatures as an allegory for animals. Measures 22.5” x 7”. Toning and white out. Near fine. Sold for $1,875.

Berke Breathed Original Hand-Drawn Comic Strip for “Bloom County” — Milo Scares Opus

Berke Breathed hand-drawn comic strip for “Bloom County”, published 17 February 1988. Berke Breathed seems prescient in this four panel strip regarding “spy satellites” or drone technology, with Milo Bloom taking the opportunity to scare Opus about their “knee-boggling” ramifications. Strip measures 17″ x 6.5″, hinged with archival tape to double-mat measuring 22″ x 11.5″. Very good to near fine. Sold for $1,500.
