Large Collection of Presidential Eyeglasses — Nine Pairs Belonging to Nine U.S. Presidents, Including Truman, Reagan, LBJ, Clinton, Bush 41 and Bush 43, Carter, Nixon & Ford

Impressive set of nine eyeglasses owned and worn by nine U.S. Presidents, with many accompanied by signed photos and letters from the Presidents. Set includes eyeglasses worn by nearly every post-WWII President, including: Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, all gifted to the Museum of Ophthalmology, and each framed in its own presentation shadowbox.

Pair of the ”Great Communicator’s” eyeglasses, owned and worn by President Ronald Reagan. Glasses are framed with a lovely letter signed ”Ronald Reagan” from 1 December 1994 on Reagan’s stationery that reads in part, ”It is my pleasure to submit my personal reading glasses for your exhibit…I have lived a very long and full life and been richly blessed with overall good health. While my eyes have always been sharp…these days…my eyes need a little more help and I use these spectacles. Having been a voracious reader since I was a little boy, I simply couldn’t allow this precious gift to be taken from me. / So with my trusty glasses a whole new, vivid world is opened up to me. They bring the pages of my books alive, a lovely softness to the face of my Nancy, and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of a brilliant California day.” Lot also includes a photo of Reagan wearing a similar or the exact pair of eyeglasses, working in his Fox Plaza, Los Angeles office. Personal Optics Mauritius reading glasses with amber colored plastic frames measure 5.375” from endpiece to endpiece. Shadowbox frame measures 29.5” x 21.25” x 3.25” deep, in near fine condition. Sold for $31,250.

Collection of 25 Eyeglasses Belonging to U.S. Presidents & World Leaders — Including RFK & Ronald Reagan’s Personal Pairs, Along with an Autograph Letter Signed by Reagan from the Early 1960s

Large collection of eyeglasses belonging to U.S. Presidents and world leaders, including a pair belonging to Ronald Reagan, along with Reagan’s autograph letter signed, and accompanying signed envelope. Composed on his Yearling Row ranch stationery, where Reagan lived from 1951-1966, the 40th President writes to Dr. Bagley in full, ”Since I’m now a wearer of Corneal Lens’ this is the best I can do. / These broken parts are all that remain except for one spare pair I keep on hand in addition to my ‘Corneals’. / Best Regards / Ronald Reagan”. Letter is undated but accompanied by original envelope handwritten by Reagan, signed ”R. Reagan / Pacific Palisades Calif.” with a postmark from either 1962 or 1963. Letter is addressed to Dr. Melvin J. Bagley, who assembled this large collection for ”The Famous People’s Eyeglasses Museum”, which he founded.

Another pair of eyeglasses comes from Robert Kennedy, whose accompanying typed letter signed is on Attorney General stationery, dated 26 July 1963. Kennedy writes, ”My belated thanks for your letter requesting a pair of eyeglasses I have used for the collection. At long last, we have located a pair which are no longer useful. These are being mailed to you under separate cover…[signed] Robert F. Kennedy”.

Other eyeglasses, nearly all with accompanying letters, come from Egyptian President Anwar Sadat (two pairs), Israeli President Ephraim Katzir, Colombian President Belisario Betancur, Austrian President Kurt Waldheim, Italian Prime Ministers Giulio Andreotti and Bettino Craxi, the Presidents of Ireland and Chile, Vice President Spiro Agnew, and Presidential candidates Thomas Dewey, Barry Goldwater, and Alf Landon. Other glasses come from politicians Elizabeth Holtzman and Estes Kefauver, Speaker of the House Carl Albert, New York City Mayor Abraham Beame and Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek, the General Secretary of the Communist Party Gus Hall, and several others.

The lot also includes letters from individuals declining sending a pair of eyeglasses, including a letter from Eleanor Roosevelt who writes, ”I wish I could send you a pair of eye glasses for your collection. Unfortunately, however, I do not have any except the ones I am now using for reading…[signed] Eleanor Roosevelt”. Each pair of glasses is labeled in its own case, compiled by Dr. Bagley beginning in the 1960s through the 1980s, most in very good condition. Lot also includes a copy of his book, ”Celebrity Sighting”. A very unique and personal collection of memorabilia worn by the most influential leaders of the world. Sold for $15,699.

Collection of Items Signed by Four Presidents: Thomas Jefferson & James Madison Ship’s Paper Signed, Abraham Lincoln Autograph Note Signed, and Woodrow Wilson Signature

Collection of three items signed by four Presidents: Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Woodrow Wilson. Lot includes:

1) Scalloped ship’s paper signed by Thomas Jefferson as President and James Madison as Secretary of State. Attractive document features two nautical vignettes, undated, likely signed by the men prior to intended use as was the custom. With intact red wax-backed paper seal. Vellum document measures 10.25” x 15.5”. Folds, else near fine.

2) Abraham Lincoln autograph note signed as President, dated during the Civil War on 16 September 1861. Lincoln writes in full, ”I approve the within, if no objection is known at the War Department. / A. Lincoln / Sep. 16, 1861.” Visible portion of note measures 3.125” x 2”. Not examined out of frame, but appears near fine.

3. Large Woodrow Wilson signature, measuring 5” x 3”. Not examined out of frame. Some haloing to signature, else near fine. Sold for $13,750.

Thomas Jefferson Ship’s Paper Signed as President — Countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State — Rare

Ornate scalloped ship’s paper, boldly signed by Thomas Jefferson as President and countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State. The ship’s paper authorizes the passage of a ship, though the document is not dated or filled in with specifics as to which ship was allowed safe passage. With bold, clear signatures by Jefferson, ”Th:Jefferson” and Madison, ”James Madison” at lower right. Jefferson’s signature is large, measuring 2” x 1”. Reads in part, ”…To pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandise without any hindrance, seizure or molestation…Given under the Hand and the Seal of the United States of America…” With two vignettes at top of a lighthouse and a sailboat. Original blindstamped seal at lower left. Document measures 10.25” x 15”, matted and framed to an overall size of 16” x 21”. Bisecting folds throughout, else near fine. Sold for $13,401.

Thomas Jefferson Ship’s Papers Signed as President — Countersigned by James Madison

Thomas Jefferson ship’s papers signed as President. Attractive vellum document shows naval vignettes intercut with a scalloped top edge, complete with red wax-based paper seal. Signed by the President, “Th. Jefferson” at bottom right, and also “James Madison” as Secretary of State. Document is dated 1 July 1805, reading in part, “…the Ship Hermoine of Biddeford [Maine], Solomon Hopkins — master or commander, of the burthen of Two Hundred Twenty Five of 83/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with Nine men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandize, without any hindrance, seizure or molestation the said ship appearing by good testimony to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States…” Measures 10.375″ x 14.875″. Light discoloration and folds, one touching signatures, overall in very good plus condition. Sold for $11,196.

Multi-Presidential Signed Photo: Eisenhower, Truman, Hoover & Nixon Sign a Photo of Eisenhower’s Inauguration — Framed in Wood From Inauguration Stand — With PSA/DNA COA for All Signatures

Photo of Eisenhower’s presidential inauguration signed by four U.S. Presidents: Eisenhower, Truman, Hoover and Nixon, framed in wood taken from the inauguration stand. Special photo is signed ”Dwight D. Eisenhower” boldly in black across the lower border’s center. Signature is flanked on the right by that of ”Richard Nixon” and on the left by ”Herbert Hoover” and ”Harry Truman”. Image depicts Eisenhower taking the Oath of Office in the presence of the signers; with Hoover as former President, Truman as Ike’s immediate predecessor and Richard Nixon standing by as the new Vice President. Hoover’s face is hidden by Truman in the photo. Matte photo measures approximately 10” x 8” and is framed in wood from the stand. Toning, else near fine. With Provenance from White House Journalist Stephen V. Feeley. Also with a COA from PSA/DNA for all four signatures. Sold for $4,000.

Fantastic Presidential Photo Signed by Five Presidents: Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon & Gerald Ford — With University Archives COA

Five Presidents signed photo, signed by Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon & Gerald Ford. The photo was taken at the dedication of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on 4 November 1991, the first time that five Presidents were brought together for an event. Reagan adds an additional inscription to the photo, ”To Helen Donaldson – With Very Best Wishes”, dedicated to Helen Colle Donaldson, who served with nine Presidents in the White House as an appointments secretary. Glossy photo measures 10” x 8”. In exceptional, near fine condition and with University Archives COA for all five signatures. Sold for $3,800.

Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and James Garfield Sign This 19th Century Autograph Book — Likely Signed by Grant as President

Autograph book with the signatures of two Presidents, Ulysses S. Grant and James A. Garfield. In addition to these two, the book boasts the signatures of 274 other 19th century luminaries, including the Attorney General, Secretaries of the Treasury, War, Navy and Interior, all U.S. Supreme Court Justices of the time, and hundreds of legislators including Speaker of the House of Representatives and General Nathaniel P. Banks. Leather bound book was owned by Pennsylvania Congressman William S. Stenger, who served during the late 1870s, during the time of Grant’s Presidency; in fact, the very first signature in the book is Grant’s, with succeeding signatures from early in 1876, dating the book to Grant’s term in office. Autograph book measures 7.25” x 8.5”, with silk more endpapers and clean, well-preserved interior pages. Some of the leather is cracked and binding has been reinforced with tape. Overall very good condition. Housed in a near fine custom one-quarter leather clamshell case. Sold for $2,588.

Rare 8” x 10” Photograph Signed by Four Presidents — Signed by Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan — With PSA/DNA COA

Photograph signed by Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. The four Presidents met in the White House on 8 October 1981, the first time four living Presidents were ever photographed together. Boldly signed by all four Presidents with their full names. 8” x 10” photograph is matted and framed to 15.75” x 18”. Discreet closed tear to lower right and small crease to lower left. Very good to near fine. With a COA from PSA/DNA. Sold for $1,563.
