Clarence Darrow autograph letter signed regarding Prohibition, which Darrow passionately disagreed with from a legal standpoint. Upon his personal stationery, Darrow writes on 27 September (likely 1930) to Dr. Forrest R. Black, a law professor and like-minded colleague. Letter reads,”My Dear Mr. Black / I have just been reading ‘What rights are left’ by Henry Allen Johnson a New York lawyer. It is on a phase of the prohibition question indicated by the title. It is a bully-good book which shows a triumph familiarity with the subject and the holdings of all the courts on the various questions that have arisen under the ‘fool law’. On page 96 he says: an able & scholarly criticism of the Carroll decision will be found in the Columbia Law Review for December 1929, by Professor Forrest R. Black of Univ. of Kentucky – &c &c &c – / I have been thinking a good deal about your papers. They should be published. I am going to N.Y. Nov. 15th I know one or two good publishers that I think might do something with [them]. If you can do send them back to me I will try. Very truly / Clarence Darrow”. Dr. Black would go on to publish ”Ill-starred Prohibition Cases: A Study in Judicial Pathology” in 1931. A P.S. is added to the letter, possibly by Darrow’s secretary. Single page measures 7.25” x 10.5”. Minor toning and creasing, overall very good plus condition. Sold for $1,563.
Clarence Darrow autograph letter signed regarding Prohibition. Upon his personal stationery dated 13 June, Darrow writes Dr. Forrest R. Black, a law professor and colleague: ”Dear Mr. Black / I will be glad to read your articles. Although I doubt if you would get any anti-prohibitionists to take them up. However it is possible that some publishers might do it. Your [illegible] are exceedingly good and timely but of course the audience for really good stuff is quite limited…I suppose you know my friend Dr. Paul Anderson, of whom I am very fond. Send the package to my house as any future correspondence. It is 1537 E. 60th St. Chicago. I visit my office very rarely. With kind regards / Clarence Darrow”. 2pp., front and verso letter measures 7.25” x 10.25”. Very good plus. Sold for $1,563.

Famous American lawyer Clarence Darrow typed letter signed. Upon his personal stationery, Darrow’s letter dated 27 June 1930 is addressed to Dr. Forrest R. Black, law professor at University of Kentucky. Letter discusses the manuscript for Black’s eventual book on prohibition, ”Ill Starred Prohibition Cases: A Study in Judicial Pathology”. Letter reads, ”Dear Mr. Black: The Manuscript came yesterday and I have just finished reading it. I am very enthusiastic over it. Nothing that has come to my attention on the subject (not excepting my own stuff) has pleased me so much. No other book has discussed the abject surrender of the courts to fanaticism, so far as I know, as you have done it. There is no reason why any one should be surprised at the judges. Next to the priests they have always been the enemies of human freedom. The mush stuff about Taft at the time of his death disgusted me. He never did anything in his whole career but keep his finger on the pulse of the powerful. He was not even a man of attainments. Still, I don’t know what to advise you about the book. I doubt if any popular house would take it. Possibly Horace Liveright or Simon and Shuster, or Boni Brothers. I know these quite well, and if I could be of any use to you I would gladly see them, or communicate with them about it…[signed] Clarence Darrow”. Single page letter measures 7” x 10.5”. Toning and creasing, else near fine. Sold for $1,000.
Clarence Darrow typed letter signed, dated 30 May 1930 on his personal stationery. Letter is addressed to Doctor Forest R. Black, a law professor at the University of Kentucky who wrote the book on prohibition, ”Ill Starred Prohibition Cases: A Study in Judicial Pathology”, of which a copy is included along with the letter. Darrow penned the Foreword to the book. Gorham Press: Boston: 1931. Letter reads in full: ”I thank you very much for sending me your article in which you discuss the foolish decision of the Supreme Court in the case where barrels were seized on the ground that they were to be used to contain whiskey. There seems to be no limit to the fanaticism of the people interested in this prohibition crusade. The fanaticism extends from the lowest Methodist evangelist to the Supreme Court of the United States. Your discussion is an excellent one. I don’t see how it can be disputed except by a decision which will not be rendered for some time yet. You said nothing about returning this paper and I presume you don’t need it now. I think I shall keep it until the case is tried. I trust the Mercury will print this article and I think it will. It certainly is sound and well written and should appeal to Mr. Mencken. I have a very warm friend down there in your college, Dr. Anderson, and I have been intending for some time to come down and see him, but, I intend lots of things that I never accomplish. Thanking you for your kindness.” Signed ”Clarence Darrow” in blue ink. One page letter measures 7” x 10.5”. Toning and light folds throughout. Book runs 162pp. with original dustjacket. Toning to pages and chipping to dustjacket. Very good condition overall. Sold for $1,000.

I shall not lay it down till finished, I know, and then I shall want Mr. Ernest and you to come out for a visit with me, if you will, at any time that will be convenient to your leisure hours. I am sorry to be so tardy with this note, but being a man of leisure means laziness, partly, and I let the little things of life keep me busier than ever the bigger ones did, I think.
