American Gold Eagle Coins were approved for creation by the United States Congress with passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Under the legislation, there would be four different weights (1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz) and would encompass both bullion and proof versions each year. The coin is comprised of 22 karat gold and depicts Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ version of Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle family around a nest on the reverse. The first American Gold Eagle was minted in 1986 and demand for the coin has been dynamic over the years. In 1986 there initially was a large demand of over 1.3 million for the 1 ounce coin. The demand subsided in the 1980s and 1900s then began to culminate again in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
