Former professional hockey player Wayne Gretzky made his National Hockey League debut in the 1979-1980 season as an 18 year old for the Edmonton Oilers. He had previously played for the World Hockey Association in the 1978-1979 season. During his first NHL season he won the Hard Memorial Trophy for the Most Valuable Player and scored a total of 137 points, which still remains the highest point total for an NHL rookie. Following his first season with the NHL Gretzky would continue to play for 19 additional seasons in the NHL. He played for the Oilers until 1988, then for the Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers before his retirement in 1999. Many consider Gretzky to be the greatest hockey player of all time and he has been nicknamed “The Great One”.
