James Edward “Pete” Runnels (January 28, 1928 – May 20, 1991) spent 14 years as a Major League Baseball infielder, twice leading the league in batting average as a member of the Boston Red Sox in the 1960s, and batting over .300 six times. Runnels’ professional career began as a member of the Washington Senators (1951-1957), spending time as a shortstop, as well as at first, second, and third. In 1956, he managed a .310 batting average with 179 hits, and would bat .274 over seven seasons with the club. But Runnels really excelled after he joined the Boston Red Sox (1958-1962). In five seasons, Runnels never hit less than .314 (1959), and won two American League batting titles (1960, 1962) — and finished second to Ted Williams for the 1959 batting crown, falling just six points behind the BoSox legend. A five-time All-Star — all while in a Boston uniform — Pete batted .320 for the Red Sox, and ended his career following two seasons with the Houston Colt .45s (1963-1964). A career .291 batter, Runnels retired with 49 home runs, 1,854 hits, 630 RBI, 876 runs, and 282 doubles. He later coached the Red Sox (1965-1966) and acted as interim manager for the last 16 games of the 1966 campaign, going 8-8.
