Ernest Alfred Stautner (April 20, 1925 – February 16, 2006) (DT) is the only player to have his number officially retired by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ernie was a four-year starter at offensive and defensive tackle at Boston College before joining the professional ranks. The Pittsburgh Steelers took Stautner in the second round of the 1950 NFL Draft. Ernie proved to be a significant choice for the struggling Steelers and he remained with Pittsburgh for 14 seasons (1950-1963) where he was the cornerstone of a fierce Steelers defense. Ernie was named to the 1958 All-Pro First Team, was a nine-time NFL Pro Bowl selection and earned the 1957 Pro Bowl MVP Award. Though he wasn’t necessarily known for forcing fumbles, he seemed to have a knack for recovering fumbles as he retired as the career leader in fumble recoveries (23). He also held the record for safeties (3) in a career at the time of his retirement. The durable and determined tackle played 173 games, missing only six in 14 years, despite suffering numerous injuries and broken bones. Ernie Stautner was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969.
