John Sherratt “Black Jack” Stewart (1917-1983) suffered a severe spinal injury rupturing a disc in 1950, that doctors felt would end his career and may require him to walk with a cane. However, having missed the remainder of the 1950-51 season, Stewart had the disc removed, and was back on the ice the following year. Black Jack started playing professionally with the Pittsburgh Hornets of the International-American Hockey League before entering the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings in 1938. Stewart played defense for the Red Wings (1938-1949) and the Chicago Black Hawks (1950-1952), and though he played with a fierce passion, was not necessarily considered a dirty player. Stewart helped the Wings capture the 1943 and 1950 Stanley Cup championships over the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers, respectively. Jack Stewart retired after the 1951-52 season with 31 regular season goals and 84 assists while adding 765 penalty minutes. In postseason play, he also scored five goals and 14 assists in 80 career playoff games, winning two NHL titles. Black Jack Stewart was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1964.
