The Raven was a 1935 horror film based on Edgar Allan Poe’s poem of the same title directed by Louis Friedlander and stars Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. The film revolves around a retired surgeon who descends into madness after he’s unable to have the girl he pines for.

1942 Oscar for “Outstanding Transparency Special Effects” in “Reap the Wild Wind” — Awarded to Farciot Edouart

Farciot Edouart’s 1942 Oscar in the category of “Outstanding Transparency Special Effects” for “Reap the Wild Wind.” A ten-time Oscar winner, Edouart was presented this Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award on 4 March 1943 at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. He shared the award with Gordon Jennings and William Pereira. The movie, starring Paulette Goddard and John Wayne, is a swashbuckling story of ships traveling around 1840’s Key West. Edouart, who began as a cameraman in 1915, was well-known in the movie industry as an innovator, especially in the area of rear projection. Two engraved plaques are placed on opposite sides of the pedestal. One reads, “Academy First Award / To Farciot Edouart / For Outstanding Transparency Special Effects / In Production Of / ‘Reap the Wild Wind’ / 1942”. The other reads, “Academy First Award / To Farciot Edouart / Assisted by Wallace Kelley / For Outstanding Transparency Photographic Effects / In Production Of / ‘Reap the Wild Wind'”. The figure and film reel, composed of gold-plated britannium and measuring 10.25″ tall, top the pedestal, bringing the total height to 13.25″. The pedestal’s diameter measures 5″ and the award weighs 6 pounds. Moderate rubbing to statuette; moderate chipping of base. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $87,475.

Amazing Movie Memorabilia From ”Jaws” — Life Jackets Worn by Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider and Steven Spielberg — Call Sheets & Dozens of Photos

Lot of ”Jaws” memorabilia and props used on set, including life jackets worn by Steven Spielberg and his cast, call sheets and an album of behind-the-scenes photos. The classic horror tale about a man-eating shark was filmed at Menemsha, a fishing village on Martha’s Vineyard in 1974 and enjoyed record success in gross revenue. Fantastic lot comprises: (1) Photo album containing 75 snapshots from the set and hotel, including 9 images of one of the animatronic sharks. Photos measure 4” x 3.5”. Album measures 9” x 11.5”. Photos are mounted to lightly adhesive pages, else near fine. (2) Roster of set personnel; 2pp. measuring 8.5” x 11”. Near fine. (3) Call sheets for shoots on 18 July 1974 and 3, 18-19 September. One page for each day, 4 pages total. 8.5” x 11”. Near fine. (4) Yellow-orange life vest labeled inside in red felt tip, ”S-Spielberg ‘Dir”’. With ”JAWS” stamp in black ink on the back and brand insignia on the left breast. Adult size M. Corrosion to zipper from exposure to moisture and light soiling, else near fine. (5) Bright orange over-the-head life preserver stamped ”JAWS” in black on the left and inscribed in black opposite, ”Orca [name of the boat] / Robert Shaw / ‘Captain Quint’ / Shark Killer / Martha’s Vineyard / ‘Amity’ / Apr. – 28 – Sept. 19, 1974 / (J.W.D.-C.S.E. – Props)”. Surface soiling and fading, else near fine. (6) Bright orange over-the-head life preserver stamped ”JAWS” in black on the left and inscribed in black opposite, ”Orca / Roy Scheider / ‘Police Chief Brody’ / Martha’s Vineyard / ‘Amity’ / Apr. – 28 – Sept. 19, 1974 / (J.W.D.-C.S.E. – Props)”. Surface soiling, else near fine. (7) Bright orange over-the-head life preserver stamped ”JAWS” in black on the left and inscribed in black opposite, ”Richard Dreyfuss / ‘Hooper’ / Oceanographer / Martha’s Vineyard / ‘Amity’ / Apr. – 28 – Sept. 19, 1974 / (J.W.D.-C.S.E. – Props)”. Surface soiling, else near fine. Vests measure 16” x 20”. Provenance from a nautical technician who worked on set and is pictured with his wife in several of the photos. Sold for $50,330.

”Uncivil Warriors” One-Sheet Movie Poster From 1935, Owned by Moe Howard

Very rare one-sheet movie poster for ”Uncivil Warriors”, one of the earliest and most beloved Three Stooges films, released in 1935. One-sheets from the 1930s are exceedingly rare, with this poster all the more special as owned by Moe Howard. Linen-backed poster measures 27” x 41”. Mild restoration at folds. Colors remain bright, with strong visual appeal, in near fine condition. Sold for $37,500.

Ultra-Rare Original 1946 Gilda Movie Poster Featuring Rita Hayworth in Her Landmark Role

Original Columbia Pictures 1946 Gilda movie poster starring Rita Hayworth in her best-known performance as Hollywood’s ultimate femme fatale. Directed by Charles Vidor, “Gilda” was released just after the end of WWII and was lauded for its mixture of genres and rather modern approach to character interaction. The poster features the iconic Hayworth in a debonair pose holding a cigarette with a headline reading in part: “There NEVER was a woman like Gilda! / Columbia Pictures presents / Rita Hayworth as Gilda with Glenn Ford…” Poster by Morgan Litho Co. measures 27″ x 41″ and has folds throughout, with a long vertical scratch and small tear down the front of her dress, reinforced with a piece of brown tape on the back of poster. Some light tan stains and pinholes on and near the borders. Very good condition overall with still vibrant colors. Very scarce. Sold for $25,000.

Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” Lobby Card from Universal’s Classic 1935 Film Starring Boris Karloff & Bela Lugosi

Lobby card from Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven”, adapted by Universal in 1935 as one of its marquee horror films. With two of Hollywood’s most bankable stars in the lead, Borris Karloff & Bela Lugosi, the darkly atmospheric and haunting film was considered too strong for 1935 audience’s tastes, but is now held as an exemplar of Universal’s horror franchise, following on the heels of “Dracula” and “Frankenstein”. Lobby card measures 14″ x 11″. Some discoloration to bottom left corner. Overall very good plus condition with still bright colors. Extremely rare. Sold for $5,000.
