Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Autograph 5″ x 7″ Pre-1928 Photo in Yankee Pinstripes and Wearing Baseball Mitts
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig autograph photograph. 5″ x 7″ black and white image depicts the two Yankee greats standing side by side on the baseball field wearing their pinstripe pants. Inscribed by Ruth in brown ink at the upper left, “For Walter from, ‘Babe’ Ruth” beside which Gehrig signs in black ink, “& Lou Gehrig”. Small .25″ tear (with no emulsion loss) at top, not affecting either signature, else fine. A difficult to acquire pairing of legendary signatures on a single photograph. A Babe Ruth signature with the quotation marks around “Babe” typifies his pre-1928 autograph and will sell at a higher value as well. Sold for $19,036.

Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Autograph on a Ball from 1927
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig autograph on a baseball. On the sweet spot, Ruth’s black ink penning reveals sizable upper-case “B” and “R” characters. Gehrig signature in black ink on adjacent panel. The presence of Johnson’s facsimile signature, under which penmanship removal can be seen, coupled with the quotation marks around “Babe” (in Ruth’s own hand, of course) likely date the keepsake to 1927, as Johnson was supplanted by Barnard in 1928, the same year Ruth abandoned the use of quotation marks. The medium-toned sphere features prominent stampings and vibrant, alternating red and blue laces. Accompanied by Letters of Authenticity from PSA/DNA and James Spence Authentication attesting that the Babe Ruth autograph is authentic. Sold for $10,470.

Very rare autograph letter signed by Yankee legend Lou Gehrig. Gehrig writes to Fred Lichtenwalter, a grape grower who supplied grapes to Gehrig and his friends, including Babe Ruth. Letter is undated but circa 1930 as Gehrig lists the address of his New Rochelle home on one, where he lived from 1928-1933. Letter is signed “Lou Gehrig” and penned in fountain pen.
Gehrig’s smooths over a misunderstanding with his grape grower. Letter reads in full, “Dear Fred: – Sorry you misinterpreted my last note – Was not questioning price or any thing. We were wondering whether we had paid you or not – Haven’t a complaint in the world, except thanks for your courtesies – While I’m at it please send 60 baskets this fall – Best Wishes / Lou Gehrig.” Single page letter measures 6.75″ x 10″. Folds, mousing along bottom edge, toning and some shadowing to writing from being folded. Very good condition. Sold for $10,028.

Gehrig makes mention of “Babe” wanting grapes as well. He writes, “Dear friend Fred: – Have been wanting to drop you a line for several weeks now, and hope it’s not too late. I would like to have 2500 lbs of those same grapes this year if it doesn’t inconvenience you – Babe wants half of these, but ship them all to me, and also the bill and I’ll straighten it all out with you – As I told you in Glen.[?], those grapes last year were marvelous, and I hope this years crop is just as good – / Please drop a line to me in Washington (Wardman Park Hotel) on Thurs. Fri. or Sat – whether you received this letter O.K. and if you can ship the grapes, and about what time we should expect them – / Many thanks again, Fred, I appreciate this ever so much / Cordially / Lou Gehrig / 9 Meadow Lane / New Rochelle, N.Y-“. Two page letter on stationery from Boston’s Brunswick Hotel, each measuring 6″ x 9.5”. Folds, some mousing along edges, toning and light shadowing to writing from being folded. Very good condition. They sure were wonderful and arrived in the very best condition – / I sure want to thank you once more and tell you how much we appreciated them – Cordially / Lou Gehrig.” Single page letter on bifolium stationery measures 5″ x 6.5″. Folds, with small closed tear starting at edge of horizontal fold. Some toning and discoloration, overall very good condition. Sold for $8,400.
Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Signed Ball
Bambino and the Iron Horse applied their autographs to this clean Official American League “Barnard” ball. The Babe’s lengthy side panel inscription rates a PSA 8 and reads “To Joseph Rebentisch, Washington D.C., From ‘Babe’ Ruth.” Gehrig simply signed his name in a lighter but still entirely legible ink. The date “7/4/28” is penned below Gehrig’s signature in an unknown hand. Lot accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA stating that the Babe Ruth autograph is authentic. Sold for $7,500.
Lou Gehrig Autograph Plus Walter Hagen, Walter Johnson & Babe Ruth in an Autograph Album
1920’s sports and celebrity autograph book featuring a Babe Ruth signed page, Lou Gehrig autograph page, Walter Johnson signed page Walter Hagen, the 1926 Washington Senators, Enrico Caruso and many more. Ruth’s black ink signature reads “‘Babe’ Ruth (signed)/ Sep 7 – 1927.” Gehrig’s black ink signature reads “Lou Gehrig (signed)/Fenway Park / Sept. 4, 1927.” Some signatures accompanied by doodles. Leatherette book measures 4″ x 5″ and contains 120pp. filled with signatures from cover to cover. Autograph book originally belonged to a boy named Charles Francis Richard. “Autographs” printed on cover in gilt and “Elite Autograph Album” printed on title page. Some wear to cover, especially at corners, and looseness to binding, but book remains intact. Interior has toning, some spots and stains, yet all signatures bold and clear. An excellent Babe Ruth signed page and a fine Lou Gehrig autograph page. Sold for $7,300.

Lou Gehrig Inscribed and Signed Photo
Rare inscribed and signed photo of Lou Gehrig. Boldly inscribed in black fountain ink: “…To George / With Kindest Regards / Cordially / Lou Gehrig.” The New York Yankee first baseman put up some of baseball’s most impressive offensive statistics while playing in 2,130 consecutive games over 14 seasons, a record that stood for more than 50 years until Cal Ripken Jr. broke it in 1995. Gehrig’s consecutive streak was halted only by the stunning diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the debilitating disease of the nervous system that would come to bear his name. Photo measures 4″ x 6″ and is accompanied by original frame. Excellent condition. A rare personalized item from the beloved “Pride of the Yankees.” Sold for $5,500.

Signed 10″ x 8″ photo depicting the 1937 World Champion New York Yankees and bearing 30 signatures, accounting for every uniformed subject pictured. The signatures are rendered in the same consistent black fountain pen and include Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Red Ruffing, Selkirk, Crosetti, Jorgens, Hoag, Scheiber, Henrich, Hadley, Andrews, Makosky, Murphy, Rolfe, Vance, Malone, Glenn, Fletcher, Powell and Sullivan (mascot). Ten of the signatures are clubhouse versions including Wicker, Heffner, Saltzgaver, Dickey, Pearson, Gomez, Schulte, McCarthy, Combs and Lazzeri. Very good dark, legible signatures.
