Waterloo Medal 1815
A beautiful Waterloo medal celebrating the English victory over Napoleon Bonaparte on 18 June 1815. Medal is renamed and engraved on front and verso as well as side. The front presents a profile bust and reads, “George P. Regent” while the verso presents a winged woman and reads, “Wellington / Waterloo / June 18 / 1815.” Inscription on side reads, “Lieut. Henry De Witte, 4th Line Batt. K.G.L.” Medal is attached to an English ribbon of burgundy and navy. The Waterloo medal was the first campaign medal, issued to officers and soldiers who had taken part in one or more battles at Ligny, Quatre Bras and Waterloo. Medal with a gleaming silver finish measures 0.75″ in diameter and weighs 0.1 pound. An historic item from Napoleon Bonaparte’s last battle. Sold for $3,000.

Medal Issued by The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire & Bestowal Document From 1919
Medal honoring the Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, accompanied by the bestowal document. Commanders’ breast badge is of the first type, made in the shape of a cross fleury with ice blue enamel over guilloche limbs. At the center is a gold or bronze medallion depicting an enthroned figure in profile with sun in the sky, surrounded by a red enamel border reading, ”For God And The Empire”. Medal is topped with an articulated openwork crown attached to a loop for suspending. Verso bears the monogram of George V as ”G.R.I.”, George Rex Imperator. Accompanied by its 12” x 1.75” purple grosgrain ribbon and document bestowing the medal on the new commander, Dudley Sinclair Marjoribanks, Esq., with facsimile signature of George and signed on the second page, ”Edward P”. Medal measures 2.5” x 3.75”. Near fine. Ribbon shows fraying to the top, else near fine. Document runs 2pp. on a sheet of card-style stationery, measuring 8” x 12.75”. Toning, else near fine. Sold for $1,511.
Order of The British Empire medal, awarded to munitions officer G. Humphreys for his distinguished service during WWI. Humphreys was recommended in 1918 for the Order of the British Empire by Minister of Munitions Winston Churchill. Medal features a scene at the center circumscribed ”For God and the Empire” on the front and, on back, a monogram and tiny makers’ marks. Cross patonce shaped medal features a crown finial, from which it is suspended from a purple ribbon with pin on the back. Housed in aubergine Garrard & Co. jewel box with O.B.E. in gilt upon the hinged lid. Interior is lined in cream satin and velvet, with Garrard label inside, reading in part, ”…Goldsmiths, Jewelers, & C. / TO THE KING / By Special Appointment / To The Crown…” Abrasions to case and some wear to interior lining. Accompanied by a 4.25” x 5.25” cabinet card photo of Humphreys and a typed letter signed from the Acting Secretary of the Order of the British Empire officially informing Humphreys of his nomination. Single-page letter measures 7.5” x 10”. Medal measures 2” x 2.75” excluding ribbon. Medal shows some tarnishing, else near fine. Sold for $1,156.
